Kazu Yakitori and Sake Bar
"Like that hidden bar that only the locals know about, Kazu Yakitori bar was opened as a Japanese grilled-chicken and sake bar.Located on the second story of a building on Courtney Place, it is a great hide-away from the hustle and bustle of the busy city. From couples to groups, everyone can enjoy the expansive counter space that looks over the open kitchen, or the table seating both inside and on the balcony. There are many delicious drinks to choose from, from the carefully selected Sake, Japanese beers on tap, to the stronger Shochu, and New Zealand wines. There is nothing better than enjoying a cold draft beer while watching your food being immaculately prepared in front of you."

I came here for a late dinner and to be honest, it was awesome. We shared several different things at our table so I got to try a wide variety of food, and each dish was amazing! Possibly the tastiest thing was the prawns wrapped in bacon. Really enjoyed this experience and would recommend it to anyone who asked. Also got to sit out on the balcony in the twilight, which was really nice.
The food tastes good, but the quality of food is not worth the price at all. The quality of sushi is normal, which is the same as that of "boxed sushi". The noodles of ramen are very sticky and inelastic. The quality and taste of kebabs are better than sushi. The space of eating area is very narrow and loudly, as a big person when I was eating I had to curl up myself to prevent my elbow to touch other’s. Next time I will only come here to drink some alcohol with some kebabs. Sushi is not recommended. Before you come here I strongly recommend you are already full otherwise you will cost a lot here. The "Japanese style" of this shop is more attractive than the foods.
So glad we found this place! Everything we ordered was so delicious, and I have eaten a lot of yakitori in Auckland and overseas. The Yakitori was sooo good and probably the yummiest grilled sweetcorn I have ever had in my life! We ordered 7-8 small dishes including a half sized tonkotsu garlic ramen and left so full and so happy, will definitely return anytime we're back in Wellington. Nice range of drinks, including sake and wine and beer, chu-hi and cocktails. The staff were really cute and nice, very good service. Highly recommended.
It used to be a lot better and I would come in weekly for the teriyaki tofu don. This option has been removed from the menu for some reason? Vegetarian options are now quite limited and I ordered the teriyaki tofu hotpot instead. It was literally white rice and barely cooked tofu with a little teriyaki sauce drizzled over. It was served in a pot but was definitely not a "hot pot" as the rice was room temperature. My partner got the katsu curry rice and said the katsu chicken was good but you can get better curry from a packet. The whole experience felt low effort. After being a regular customer for years in the past I will no longer be coming back. Vegetarian options: Used to have a lot better vegetarian options for lunch. Now there are 3 offerings: Tofu salad Vege tempura soba Teriyaki tofu hotpot - I can only speak for this one and it was woeful.
Just salty soup. Their soup was too watery. Not thick. The Chashu Meat was very thin and didn't seem to be cooked for ramen following traditional way to cook Chashu. I think it was thin frozen pork belly. Grilled Kumara wasn't fully cooked. Some pieces were crunchy and hard like not cooked at all.
A quaint Japanese restaurant/bar, the vibe here reminded me of the tiny pubs in the streets of Japan. We dined here on Saturday night. This place was very busy. I highly recommend booking ahead of time if you plan to visit during busy hours. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. In saying that, they struggled in handling orders. We kept getting food and drinks we never ordered. I also never got the sake that I actually ordered. They kept apologising for it but yeah I think they came to deliver the wrong food and drinks at least 5 times. Ramen was tasty, tempura was not. Portions are small for the price. We love Japanese cuisine and have been to countless Japanese restaurants, this one however fell short of expectations. In the end, I had to help the cashier correct our bill. There were at least 5 or 6 items that we never ordered. Again, they were very apologetic about it.
This place truly earned a full five star review! We got in early without a reservation and they were nearly booked out but still took us. Food was absolutely stunning, service left nothing to be desired and the place is beautiful. We got to chat with the chef while our food was being cooked and she was so friendly. We ordered both ramen and hot pot rice, along with a selection of other things and it was truly the best we've ever had. Will definitely return and recommend to everyone we know!
The food was amazing. We kept ordering one after the other. Authentic Japanese vibes. Must visit with a group of friends.Food: 5/5
One of the few restaurants open at 9pm. Ordered curry Katsu set and Salmon salad with Karaage. Order came pretty quickly. Salmon salad was not really that much. Karaage was a bit over fried, but still okay. Only downside was they used a very sour mayonnaise, which a bit overruled the taste of the Karaage itself. A Kewpie mayo would be a better choice. For the salad as well. But apart from that, all good.
Sashimi was very stale and my friend and I had the stomachache after eating it. The beef skewers are very salty and really not recommended. And the waitress urged us to leave during the meal. We were very unhappy with this dinner.
