Story

The Kauri Museum is in the west coast village of Matakohe, Northland, New Zealand. The museum, to the south of the Waipoua Forest, contains many exhibits that tell the story of the pioneering days when early European settlers in the area extracted kauri timber and kauri gum.
The museum has over 4000 sq metres of undercover exhibits, including the largest collection of kauri gum in the world, and the largest collection of kauri furniture. It has a model of a 1900s kauri house with furniture and models in the dress of the early years, and an extensive collection of photographs and pioneering memorabilia. On the wall, there are full-scale circumference outlines of the huge trees, including one of 8¹⁄₂ metres, larger even than Tane Mahuta. The museum includes a working mock-up of a steam sawmill.
It tells its story from the colonial viewpoint, and presents its representation of the kauri gum industry as part of the process of creating the New Zealand identity. It has little to say about negative aspects, such as the impact on the Māori people.

Awesome museum to visit. This could literally take up half a day with the amount to see inside. Love that they have student discounts as well. Beautiful gift shop which I purchased some earrings. We have loved in Northland for years and we had a fantastic time looking through the museum. Great for locals and tourists!!
Stunning place. Good value for money. Fantastic for the whole family. Get ready to spend at least 3 hours exploring. Lots of interactive things that you can push and listen to and watch. A great record of early European history. Activities are on split levels and are also outside. A must for any visitor to the area.
Outstanding museum experience. Excellent displays, photographs and collections of not only Kauri trees, sawmills and gum, but everything relating to settlers life in North NZ. Take good time. You can come and go on your ticket as there is so much to see and a food or drink break may be required.
Heck of a lot to take in; this gets more interesting and well thought-out the deeper you go into the museum. Quite a professional feel to the curation. Definitely not a duck-in, duck-out kind of place - there's simply so much to see. Coming out the other end I had a whole new respects for how hard life was for settlers here.
This is an amazing museum. Take your time to absorb all the history and don't forget to look into the post office and the pioneer church. Finish your visit with coffee an a humdinger pasty in the cafe opposite... yummy
A lot to visit and explore , recommended, you can use the thickets for couple of days if you're going to stay in the area.
Have been here many times over the years , each visit is better than the last! Fantastic interactive displays, scavenger hunt for the kids, friendly staff. Highly recommend a visit here!
