Story

Karamu High School is a co-educational state high school in Hastings, New Zealand for students in Years 9 to 13. The school is the main co-ed secondary school within Hastings City itself. The school’s campus is located to the easternmost end of Hastings City, adjacent to Windsor Park to the west and the Heretaunga Plains’ orchards to the east.HistoryKaramu High School opened in 1962. Like many New Zealand secondary schools built in the 1960s, the school was originally built to the Nelson common design plan, characterised by two-storey H-shaped classroom blocks. While Karamu's two Nelson plan classroom blocks were demolished in 2010-11, the school retains its Nelson plan administration/hall block and its Nelson plan library building.School lifeTraditionally the school has always had a strong focus on cultural pursuits. It maintains a good reputation in dance and music competitions and provides a wide range of opportunities to students to this end. There is also wide participation in extra-curricular sporting activities and the school provides opportunities in over 20 sports with varying levels of success. In recent times the schools top teams in Netball, rugby and canoe polo have enjoyed considerable success.Karamu’s student body is subdivided in four houses Kaweka (yellow), Tukituki (blue), Te Mata (orange) and Heretaunga (red). The houses are named after local landmarks. The school stages a range of full-school events such as swimming sports, cross-country running, athletic sports and music competitions in which houses compete against each other. The school does not operate a prefect system, however, does appoint a head girl and boy, plus a deputy to each, and other school leaders: Sports Captains, Cultural Leaders, Community Leaders, Academic Leaders, Maori Cultural Leaders and House Leaders.

I had to pull my child out of this school as she was relentlessly bullied both inside and outside of the classroom to the point that police and ministry of education were involved. Staff didn’t care and in my eyes, were bystanders to the bullying. The most lazy, unprofessional school I’ve ever dealt with.
dissapointing recent contact ! called office to do an enrolment monday message was taken by office for the principal to return call after they got back form leave - no calls all week ! I call friday its been a long week and principal returns calls obviously never got our messages to call for enrolment we are declined an enrolment based on out zone mahora hastings principle proceeds to tell me we are out of there zone ! thanks ! our current school is in napier we live in hastings and Im having to drive a student with a broken leg ! council at least needs to open up the zone area considering limited housing and napier folk have been displaced ....
Sad it's the only public co-ed in Hastings, because it sucks. The school cares more about their reputation than about their students, seems like their students are only seen as numbers, not people. A lot of teachers show that they don't like their job, not to mention the one that likes to watch inappropriate content in class . Going to this school is miserable. Anyway, shout out to the only good teacher there Mr Willis.
This school is well known for not taking action and turning a blind eye when it comes to bullying. Do not send your child there!
Hello, I am very upset with the school because it took out all the good canteen food- Nova and Keira
Disgruntled parent - Came in to get an information pack & the office lady went & got someone else from a side room. Instead of the information pack I requested I was greeted with a map and a woman saying I lived out of zone just. Which was irrelevant due to the fact we are still able to apply just like anyone else and yes I understand it doesn't guarantee a spot but we were simply asking for an info pack, I replied politely but as we were leaving my teen and I got the reply of "your lucky you have a school to go to most kids don't get to go to school" to say I was gob-smacked at the inappropriate comment/treatment is an understatement! I think your office staff including those in the side rooms need to brush up on what your Principal Dionne Thomas has said on your school's website Welcome page "I welcome you to join this vision and embrace our values by attending Karamū High School" How from our encounter is that a "Welcome you to join??" Our encounter was anything but.
To be honest the only reason Karamu has a good reputation is because all the other public schools in the area are worse than Karamu but that doesn't mean that Karamu is a good school. The facility's are decent and there's a couple of good teachers but that's about all that's positive about it.
I'm a yr 9 and I'm enjoying it so far
Not enjoyable. Lots of bias teachers. Always got in trouble for small things many other students got away with... Very disappointed with this facility
So exciting - I think I'll go back tomorrow. Seriously though nice school with modern buildings and facilities
