We thoroughly enjoyed our day trip to Kapiti. From the launching of the boat from the beach by tractor to the time on the island. We were given a great talk on the history of the island and the nature that now resided there and then left to wander on the very clear trails. Saw some great birds, it all felt very wild. Enjoyable lunch with other visitors. One suggestion, consider having a couple of hides, perhaps one in the forest and one on the coast for bird watchers. There wasn’t anywhere to sit and observe for long periods. But overall a very enjoyable day, thank you.
We booked the day tour with lunch and we had an incredible time. Our guide Pania probably not the right spelling was amazing. On arrival on the Island we were treated to a potted history of the Island including the arrival of the Māoris, colonialists, whaling and agriculture concluding with the work that’s being done to restore the Island to native forest. Pania shared so many interesting stories about her ancestors and answered every question thoroughly and with enthusiasm.nThe lunch was delicious and although it was a windy day we had many bird encounters during our stay.nIf you are close to Kapiti this is a must do activity.nThank you Pania for making our day so special.
Kapiti Island is beautiful, definitely recommended. I'm not a big bird lover, but I really enjoyed seeing the many unusual birds that are easy to spot.nThe only thing I would improve is the lengthy, boring explanation about the island before you are allowed to set off on the hiking trails. It was difficult to understand because the guide spoke too quickly and he was standing against the bright light, and he gave a long-winded list of the Maori tribes that used to live here.nMy tip is to just sneak away as soon as you land and head straight for the trails.
This is a fantastic tour even in the rain! We went a couple weeks ago, with Pania and Linda who were excellent hosts. The food was delicious The glamping tents were very nice and the beds are super comfortable. The sound of the rain on the tent at night and the dawn chorus of bird sounds was something to be remembered and treasured always. Linda took us on the night walk and we spotted a little kiwi which was exciting!
We stayed overnight with 2 children and a grandparent. The staff were incredibly generous and made sure we were comfortable, going the extra mile with delicious food to meet our food preferences and allergies, offering advice for walks, making sure to update us on what to expect and offering us some history of the island and best places to see wildlife. The island is stunning, the beds comfortable, the handmade touches everywhere make the experience unique and special.
