A diverse family run farming operation incorporating large dairy farm, stud Hereford and Angus beef cattle and sheep
In 1929 David and Nellie Kane bought 'Westholm' on the edge of the Pomhaka River, Tapanui. A mix of flats and rolling ridges, they raised their 5 children here and Murray took over and added Burnfoot to this. Burnfoot is also bounded by the river and has gravel outcrops at the base of the Blue Mountain. A third block was added by Robert in 1996 to complete the land area.
Today Robert, Mary-Anne, Luke and Peter run a very diverse farming operation which incorporates 600 dairy cows, plus young stock, 3 cattle studs and 2100 cross bred ewes, 500 hoggets, growing in excess of 700 tonnes silage, 1500 bales balage and 150ha of winter crop to supplement all the livestock during the very wet and cold winter months.
All the dairy cows and in-calf heifers and heifer calves are run on the “run-off” during the winter also. We aim to breed stock that performs well and has high production on a grass based system – this principal also applies to the dairy cattle as no grain is provided for them.
