Story

The Kaituna River is in the Bay of Plenty region of the North Island of New Zealand. It is the outflow from Lakes Rotorua and Rotoiti, and flows northwards for, emptying into the Bay of Plenty near Te Puke. It was the subject of a claim concerning the effluent flowing down the river from Lake Rotorua, which resulted in movement to a land treatment system. The upper section of the Kaituna, also referred to as Okere River, offers some of the best whitewater kayaking and rafting in the world, with the Okere Falls area containing the highest commercially rafted waterfall, 7m, in the world. It is also famous for its trout fishing.Cultural claimDuring the 1970s Lake Rotorua was becoming eutrophic under heavy nutrient loadings, leading the Ministry of Works to propose diverting some sewage flow into the Kaituna River. Local iwi objected however, and filed a claim with the Waitangi Tribunal. Their objections included the insult to other iwi (leading to loss of mana) and destruction of the rivers mauri (life force or essence) which they believed would destroy its ability to sustain aquatic life. The Ministry of Works report however stated that the mauri concept was essentially religious in nature and not scientifically verifiable, while on the other hand diluting the waste would help prevent excess pollution and keep costs at a reasonable level. In Māori culture religion and science are not treated separately as they tend to be in Western culture.

We launched our boat at bell road, and went out through the bar crossing, full tide is OK half tide lift up motor or auxiliary ideal. If to shallow try maketu launch.
My family me, husband, son joined Kaituna Kayaks for a 10 day adventure, with kayaking Level 2-4, tandem kayaking, and some other nature outings each day, including a visit to natural hot springs, an evening visit to a cave of glow worms, and an incredible volcano hike. On and off the river, from sun up until well after dark, Bradley and Rhys were exceptionally skilled and caring guides. Thank you to Kaituna Kayaks for one of our best family vacations ever!
This is a review of Kaituna Kayaks located at the Kaituna river: I can’t compliment Bradley and Rhys enough! In nine days of paddling, they never stopped hustling and making sure everyone in our large and diverse group of kayakers had the best possible experience. Our group arrived in the late afternoon and Bradley and Rhys had us all sorted out with boats and gear in short order and then on the Kaituna river for shakedown paddle where we assessed the gear and they assessed each of our abilities. After that we paddled a different, beautiful, fun, and challenging river every day. In addition to the kayaking, every day had some wonderful off-river adventures including a night hike through a glow-worm cave, soaking in a natural hot spring, great local bars and restaurants, Tongariro Alpine Crossing, etc. In short, paddling with Kaituna Kayaks is a Must-Do adventure when visiting New Zealand!
