Story

Kāwhia Harbour is one of three large natural inlets in the Tasman Sea coast of the Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island. It is located to the south of Raglan Harbour, Ruapuke and Aotea Harbour, 40 kilometres southwest of Hamilton. Kāwhia is part of the Otorohanga District Council. It has a high-tide area of 68km2 and a low-tide area of 18km2.The settlement of Kāwhia is located on the northern coast of the inlet, and was an important port in early colonial New Zealand. The area of Kāwhia comprises 40to and is the town block that was owned by the New Zealand Government. The government bought it from the Europeans in 1880 "not from the original Māori owners, but from the a European who claimed ownership in payment of money owed by another European".HistoryThe harbour area was the birthplace of prominent Māori warrior chief Te Rauparaha of the Ngāti Toa tribe, who lived in the area until the 1820s.Kāwhia is known in Māori lore as the final resting-place of the ancestral waka (canoe) Tainui. Soon after arrival, captain Hoturoa made it first priority to establish a whare wananga (sacred school of learning) which was named Ahurei. Ahurei is situated at the summit of the sacred hill behind Kāwhia’s seaside marae – Maketu Marae.

A quite small and peaceful town. People are of kind and easy going, they fancy fishing there. The fish shop around the harbor caters to tourists even on Sunday with yummy fish. Apart from above, something I really want to share is TRY NOT TO take the ‘country road’ to get/leave there as the alternative route due to the flooding on the more common highway. I would highly recommend just wait until the highway is available. The country road is incredibly horrible especially when it’s getting dark. These kind of roads are of desolate, narrow, some sections are gravelled only and heavily fogged while pass through the bush areas, and get cow occupied the lane . Feeling endless while driving. It was truly a nightmare. Drive safely everybody!
West Coast of te Iki Maui. Harbour is large and very tidal . It has a difficult bar to get over to the Tasman sea. Always changing with tide and winds. Many sand banks. Been fished for generations of Maori. Full of history and beauty.
Stayed in Kawhia 2 nights for fishing charter. Love heading back home can't beat West Coast fishing!
Butiful place, butiful people .. blessed
Excellent fishing. Accommodation very cheap from $30/head...excellent takeaway ice cream parlor. Small country sports club restaurant has a small but well prep'd menu
Good old fashioned Kiwi holiday spot. Reasonably undeveloped. Has everything you need while still being a bit stripped back. Good access to different water based activities. Beach on the estury for safe swimming for kids. West Coast beach for surfing. Good fishing in the Harbour. Couple of good pubs, good fish and chips and a shop that sells most of what you need.
A beautiful, and serene place
A pity this town is not as easy to get to as Raglan, it has a lot of potential. However there is a lovely museum, great fish and chips and a good selection of ice-cream. There is a new adventure playground too.
I love this place because we had a batch here back.in the day and we.spent a lot of our childhood days in this beautiful location. Black iron sand, if u catch the tide.at.the.right.time u can dig yourself a pool and soak your limbs in a nice warm natural bath down at ocean beach. We've always said that Kawhia fish and chips are the best and we've been saying that for the past 30 years. There a few delicious eateries, a mini supermarket, petrol station, fire station, a pub and a boat house tavern. They have a great.community vibe here and I am so.grateful that I had the best.childhood there. Beautiful beaches, great fishing and diving if u know where to go. A great place to.unwind from the city scape for a long weekend or a school holiday.
Went floundering. Tents up, 3 meters from the high tide... Mmmm Kai Moana!!! Tu Meke. Awesome spot. Very private
