Jolendale Park is neighbourwood performing many important roles including ecological, educational, recreational and scientific.
Six hectares of semi-natural parkland on top of Alexandra’s Bridge Hill, Jolendale Park is unique in New Zealand – in our driest ecological district, permanently protected by the QEII National Trust for Open Space (2004), it is was New Zealand's first covenanted semi-arid exotic woodland Reserve.
Jolendale is home to a wide variety of exotic and native trees and plants, including carefully nurtured remnant native sedges and hardy shrubs, some rare (such as carex inopinata). Jolendale Park is rich in specimen trees – from many parts of the world – including snow gums, cedars, nut pines, colourful crabapples and many more.
Schist outcrops, steep bluffs, sculpted walkways, historical gold mining, the still water of the Aronui Reservoir, right next to the State Highway but somehow remote, Jolendale is a jewel in Central Otago’s crown
In Europe public open spaces like Jolendale are called ‘neighbourwoods’
– green spaces for environmental balance and biodiversity, for birds, frogs, lizards, and insects as well as trees and other plants. For quiet contemplation and healthy walking, rejuvenation and inspiration.
