John's House & The Pavilion - Vacation Rentals in Hawke's Bay

About

Boutique Accommodation in the Heart of Hawke's Bay. John Scott and Pete Bossley architecture. Stunning tranquil setting. Pet friendly.

Story

Two architectural gems are set in enormous lawns and gardens, only ten minutes' walk along the Karamu Stream from Havelock North village. Amazingly private, people can't believe how close to the village we are, yet still in a countryside setting. Cows and alpacas graze up to the fence, and a huge variety of native and exotic trees signal the changing seasons.

John’s House has two spacious bedrooms and bathrooms. The large living/dining area leads to a covered porch which provides shelter and shade. The kitchen is fully equipped for entertaining, with plenty of glasses and place settings. A fireplace, heat pump, Wi-fi, widescreen TV and digital sound system provide comfort and entertainment. The house was originally built for John and Pauline Pattison, and designed by iconic New Zealand architect, John Scott. The Pavilion, designed by award winning architect Pete Bosseley, was completed in early 2013. It reflects John Scott’s style, but on a smaller scale, with a large bedroom and adjoining kitchen-living areas. The covered porch provides a great sunny outdoor relaxation space. Both houses have gas barbecues. Your hosts, Nick and Judy Pattison live just along the Karamu Stream and aim to guarantee your complete privacy and provide any information on local attractions as required. The swimming pool is there for your use on the hottest days, and homemade breakfast provisions, fresh fruit and flowers are de rigueur

We went for the 7 Course Taster Menu, can say that the service and food was excellent, growing up in the area stone hurst farm has always had a place in my heart but to have a restaurant with its own produce makes the experience even better. We had snacks on arrival and in between courses, we liked most of the dishes on the taster menu but some we didn’t enjoy as much but that’s just personal preference and that’s what tasting menus are about.. to find out what tastes you prefer! Would highly recommend and will be coming back when the new menus come out.
Had a lovely Saturday lunch here recently. They do a very-reasonably priced three course lunch menu which we went for, with a couple of choices of each of starter, main and dessert. It also has optional pre-dessert and cheese courses but we gave those a miss. We both had the same dishes: smoked salmon for starter, poached cod for main and a brown sugar cream for dessert. Everything was delicious, excellently cooked and not too heavy. Our white port and tonic cocktails were lovely too. Great value for money and tremendous food. Well worth a visit.
Extremely nice food with great environment. Really, really blown away by the marvelous food. One of the best restaurants I have ever been to.
Lunch Excellent three course lunch. Michelin star dining at a farm house in the lovely village of Mountsorrel. At lunchtime, you can choose between two menus. A five course tasting menu £75 or the three courses £45 which we had. We ordered one of each choice. As you do The Lightly smoked Loch Duart Salmon was one of the best Salmon dishes we have had in quite a while. The Stonehurst Tamworth Pork was outrageous, both in size and delicious and very filling. You also get a little snack and bread included, which makes Michelin dining very reasonable. Everything was beautifully presented, and service was impeccable. You can see why they have retained their Michelin since 2015. Managed to have a quick chat with the man himself, Chef John Duffin, absolutely charming.
Superb food. Enjoyed our lunch today. Every course was unique and bursting with layers of flavour.Food: 5/5
Wow just Wow, I have been lucky enough to eat in some of the finest Michelin Star restaurants in the UK and abroad. Johns house sits up there and with some of the courses I can’t see why this restaurant won’t push on for 2 stars. On arrival your greeted at reception jackets removed and lead into a small lounge where your given a Nibble of a Hogget Sausage with chilli dressing. This is a stunning take on a chorizo style sausage however the yearling sheep adds a completely different texture. Krug Champagne and a Fennel cocktail we’re perfect drinks before heading up stairs to our table. You then receive two more nibbles, one of them is an exceptional piece of Trout which is the most succulent fish I have ever eaten. I won’t go into every course as I will allow you to gain your own experience. But I will say The Beef with Charcoal is on another level
Excellent gluten free food and service. Best meal I’ve had for ages. Will def go back! Loved every minute.
Expectations were high when we went to John's house. The only Michelin starred restaurant in Leicestershire. The restaurant itself was beautiful and had a great relaxed atmosphere. The service was good although we did have to prompt for more water and chase drinks The main reason for the three stars is the main reason you go to a restaurant, the food. There were quite a few of us in our party, having a selection of dishes. Some very good feedback was heard, but there was also feedback about some of the dishes being over seasoned. I had a similar problem with both my starter and main. Would I go back again? I am not sure. Love the relaxed setting and the way they run a family business from farm to plate, but for me it is all about the food
We came here about 3 weeks ago, as the lockdown slowly eased. We were pleased with the precautions and safety measures put in place. A hand sanitizer was made available in the entrance, and staff also wore visors. None of those took away from the lovely atmosphere of the place and the staff were all very welcoming. We went for the taster menu with wine flight and weren't disappointed at all. We also had a cocktail to start with. The food was excellent with the first four dishes out if this world. While the final 3 were were very good, they didn't quite hit the levels of the first four. The mackerel dish and Tom's potatoes were our favourites. Each wine pairing suited the dish well also. I'd highly recommend this place for a special treat. In total for two people who had a cocktail each, 7 course taster with wine pairing and tea/coffee, the bill came to £300. For the service and quality of food, I'm sure I'll be returning again for another special occasion.
John's house is an amazing culinary experience from start to finish. Imaginative food without been pretensious. A delight from course to course. All the staff are so polite and professional and also engaging. Love it here - it's special.Food: 5/5
