Story

John McGlashan College is a Year 7-13 secondary school for boarders and dayboys in Dunedin, a long-established university city in the south of the South Island, New Zealand.

The College stresses the individuality of each boy and aims to provide him with a strong foundation for life and extensive opportunities to develop his abilities. Over the decades, McGlashan men have become leaders in business and agriculture and in academic and professional fields.

The College gained authorization to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma in 1999, the third school in New Zealand to do so. That provided a new dimension for many and the IB’s global perspective is now firmly entrenched in the educational ethos of the College. In recent years many IB students have won highly competitive scholarships and awards, not only to New Zealand Universities but also to Duke, Melbourne, Edinburgh, Cornell, Imperial College and NYU amongst others.

I strongly question some very dubious staff appointments, absolutely unsuited to influencing young students. And the behaviour of some pupils of this school down at the hockey turf leaves much to be desired.

Famous college on Maori Hill

A very historical school, the library has a particularly beautiful scenery, and a perfect blend of classical and modern.
Compared to other Auckland schools, the academic level of the students and the quality of the teachers are significantly lower, and the school has no major advantages other than school facilities. Additionally, as the school has a significantly low international student ratio, it has consistently experienced difficulties in student management. As a parent who sent my children to this school, I have many negative memories from the teachers and local students, and I would like to say that it is not a reasonable school for the price. Also, please be aware that the school is located in Dunedin a small city, so information exchange with international students is very limited due to location.^^
It is a well-known boys' middle and high school in the southern region of New Zealand that offers the IB course. It is located in Maori Hill, a relatively clean neighborhood in Dunedin, so the surrounding environment is good and it is possible to walk to the city center in 15 minutes, but the return trip may be a bit difficult due to the steep hill. Overall, the school is small in size and has a good surrounding environment as it is located in a quiet area in a mid-sized city. However, when evaluating the most important school itself, the overall student academic level is low, and the gap seems to be widening recently. Students are also a problem, but the overall level of teachers is low and they move around a lot, making it difficult to maintain consistent quality of education. It also feels like some teachers who have been working for a long time are holding out because their abilities are low and they cannot change jobs. In the end, the atmosphere among school teachers is formed in a way that focuses on those who have significantly lower abilities but are able to hold on through political power, with the remaining teachers passing on for a while. It has become an organization that has no present and no future changes can be expected. In particular, there seems to be no reason to attend this school and pay more expensive tuition than local students from abroad. This is a school that doesn’t even deserve a single star in its review. It is a school that deserves a negative rating... I am sure that there will be a lot of loss compared to the effort and investment in studying abroad.
