Great food all round and an absolutely amazing platter. Beer selection limited.
Outstanding cuisine this should have got 5 stars...however the ambiance was poor to say the least. On arrival at a booked table one mains was already unavailable at 7 pm, plus my guest could not order the wine of her choice from the wine list because the order comes in on a Wednesday? The chef is gifted and the front of house needs training.
Popped in here for a late lunch. The food was really impressive, pleasantly surprised and the best polenta that I've had. The welcome when we arrived was a bit awkward and the service was a little hesitant and distant, overall a very pleasant lunch considering I always thought it was a bar first and foremost.
We hired the Veranda bar for a Birthday and I was very impressed with the service. Food arrived on the agreed schedule and without prompting on the night, they were very accommodating allowing us to bring a cake purchased elsewhere and provided plates and cutlery to cut and serve it. We will definitely think of them the next time we have an event
We went there for my girlfriends birthday and probably wouldn't go back anytime soon. We ordered scallops for entree's, we only got 2 small scallops and 3-4 chicken bites, at $24 was very disappointed. You need to order side dishes for the mains, feels like they are nickel and diming you considering the fillet steak is $45 and you would need to order potatoes to completed the dish. Dessert was very good.
I had the pleasure of dining at JDV in the last month. I was with a large birthday party group who were not easy to wait upon. The maitre'dhotel handled the situation with aplomb. After a starter of Flat Breads Duck Parfait, Salt and Pepper Squid good too I had the "Fish of the Day" which was beautifully cooked. There were some complaints that the duck in the duck salad that 3 out of the dozen, or so, in our group had was a bit tasteless owing to the removal of the duck's skin. Other than that most seemed to have been very happy with their meals. The atmosphere was good for our Saturday 9 November lunchtime reservation. The bar and wait staff thoroughly professional. It was good to see JDV keeping up their renowned high standards.
Worst seafood pasta I've ever has in my life, dry, over heavy on the pasata without any balance of sweet and acid. The naked burger meat was also dry and the accompanying polenta chips seriously under seasoned. Couldn't distinguish any flavour at all. Drink served still in a can instead of being opened and poured into a glass. And, in spite of their ready availability now, no alcohol free beers offered and the non alcoholic drinks menu was bog standard and lacked imagination. The one redeeming feature was the corn fritters with bacon, which were superb.
In the couple of years immediately post-quakes, JDV was an absolute go-to. Despite having little competition at the time, their standards never slipped and you could rely on the food being delicious, service fantastic and it was always busy which created a buzz. It was essentially fine-dining. We dined there last night for the first time in quite a while, and everything was the opposite. Our group was literally the only group inside for the entire time we were there 7 - 10.30 or so, yet despite that, the service was patchy at best. My beef tartare was tasty enough thanks to the accompaniments, but the beef itself - or perhaps the skills in the kitchen which allowed the bits of beef on the plate - was simply too sinewy and the pieces too large. Beef tartare should be diced finely and the meat itself from the best part of the beast so it's melt in the mouth. It kind of seemed like someone had roughly chopped up a rump steak and sent it out with some flavours to try and disguise it. My partner and I both had the fish of the day as it was snapper. This came with prawns and clams. The snapper was dry, salty and didn't taste at all fresh. The prawns were chewy. I didn't try the clams. There was no discernable sauce available. Not even a lemon to squeeze over it. Thankfully the sides we ordered which I sampled - duck fat potatoes, brussell sprouts with bacon and mash with a delicious jus - were tasty. Lastly, we ordered cheese boards for the table. The three cheeses on the menu were gouda, blue and brie. The cheeses to come out were gouda, brie and what seemed to be a type of goats' cheese which was nice enough but not what was ordered and they didn't say anything. Blue cheese is a cheese board staple, and it seemed like the accompaniments were there to balance with blue and not goats' cheese. Personally, very disappointed. However for balance, others seemed happy with their meals including the pork, beef and lamb plus salmon entree. Did I say anything at the time? No. It was a mates' 40th dinner and as he ended up shouting this didn't seem appropriate at the time, but ordinarily I would say something as I went up to pay.
Loved this little place.. But I'd heard rave revues about the oyster dishes, but when we got there they had none.. A table full of people walked out because they had only chosen JDV for the oysters.. Friendly staff and beautiful food otherwise :
First of all our fries came out with mayonnaise instead of aioli, and after we complained we over heard the chef saying that it was "roasted garlic aioli". It was absolutely poor that even a chef could make this big of a mistake. Secondly, our fillet steak came out cold after it had been sitting for a while, it was also amplified by small portion size. Lastly, the chicken was very very over cooked, and dry. It is the equivalent to a very cheap/poor bar meal with restaurant prices. If I could I would personally rate this 0 stars.
