Story

One of New Zealand's best tourist attractions, the International Antarctic Centre provides visitors of all ages with an interactive, fun and exciting experience of Antarctica.

From the minute you venture through the alluring icy entrance, you'll be captivated by the magic that is, Antarctica.

Learn of the Historic Hut legacies left by the great Antarctic explorers and experience the stunning light and sound show of the Antarctic's 4-seasons where it snows every 6 minutes.

Venture through Scott Base, New Zealand's base down on the ice and head outside to 'Antarctica', where it's a stunning Summers day at minus 8 degrees Celcius. Warm jackets are provided, because an Antarctic storm blows through 'Antarctica' regularly and wind chills get down to minus 18 degrees Celcius! Brrrr!

Take the Polar Plunge challenge and see how long you can hold your hand in the icy Antarctic water.....

Our Little Blues. With daily room servicing and a diet consisting exclusively of imported fish, the world's smallest penguins enjoy a pretty cushy life here at the Antarctic Centre! The Penguin Encounter allows visitors to view Little Blue Penguins in a natural-themed environment. The Penguins held here are birds that have been rescued and cared for, some since they were chicks.

Then prepare for real funs! Buckle up for the ride of your life across rough terrain in the unique and exciting all terrain amphibious Hagglund!

"Ice Voyage" is an exciting 4D EXTREME experience that will take you on a simulated cruise around Antarctica.

From the 18 April, Happy Feet 4D will also be showing in the 4D theatre. Come and join Mumble and friends for a bit of fun!

In the Gallery, you'll learn about modern day Antarctica, including the Antarctic Treaty partners, the human impact on the continent, the wildlife and plant systems and Antarctica’s effect on the globe. The gallery is full of tactile, visual and interactive experiences.

'Beyond the Frozen Sunset' is a 17 min HD movie of stunning images and footage covering a seasonal arc from sunset to sunrise.

The International Antarctic Centre - it's the coolest fun in town and quite possibly the closest you;ll get to Antarctica without mounting your own expedition!

Allow 2-3 hours to fully enjoy your Antarctic experience.

This attraction is a must visit for anyone who is in Christchurch. It offers great educational value. There is comprehensive information about Antarctica, life on the continent, ongoing preservation efforts about the continent and much more. Certainly made us more aware of the importance of protecting and preserving our environment and indeed our planet. Invaluable experience!
Fantastic experience. Plan to spend a good 3-4 hours. Penguin feeding, 4D cinema, snowstorm experiences are amazing. One of its kind center giving visitors a feel of what it's like to experience the great icy continent of Antarctica. Good Cafe. Accessible by public transport, close to the Christchurch International Airport.
Unfortunately I went wrong day and time to visit. People staying at same motel had been a few days earlier and said it was great and went round twice, so thought I'd go. Unfortunately they hadn't mentioned I needed to be there at a certain time and on particular days to see everything and I hadn't bothered to check on google as I just went on what they'd told me. Only day I could go was Wednesday morning, so missed out on the Huskies not there Wed/Thurs?. Also missed out on penguin feeding as got there 20min too late be there well before 1030am if going in morning. By time I'd stopped and looked at the penguins rescues that can't be released back into the wild and a few other things inside was 5 mins late for the 4D show and they'd locked the door so missed that too. they do say it happens in threes, lol. Best bit while there was the hagglund ride outside and only paid $30, I think because penguin feeding had already finished and no huskies either. Would I go back, probably not, but could be an entertaining morning for families with young kids.
Had a few hours to fill in so headed here. Best suited if you had kids of any age but still enjoyed our visit. Lots to learn and very interactive. Be warned if you do the artic storm experience, wear more than a thin t-shirt
Too notch, first class, A1! Great experience for kids of all ages. Very interactive. Very educational. Cannot recommend it highly enough. Should rate as a "Definite" on anyone's list of things to see and do in Christchurch.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
We had an absolutely brilliant day at the Antarctic Centre! We met huskies, spent time with Lizzie the penguin behind the scenes, experienced an Antarctic storm, stepped up to the ice challenge and had an exhilarating ride in a Hagglund - an epic day that is truly 5*s and I would highly recommend to anyone!
WOW! This place is amazing! The hagglund tour was great, actually not as rough as I was expecting given all the precautions. The Antarctic storm experience was really fun and seeing the little penguins was a cool experience. Lots to see and learn, worth a visit for sure.
We loved it, we did all the attractions and spent all morning there, our son was disappointed he wasn't able to do the VIP penguin tour, children need to be 15 to do on their own and when we booked online there was only 1 ticket available. The staff were helpful, but a little under staffed for a busy school holiday day. We loved the Huskies, penguin feeding, ride in Haggland and all the information and videos.
If u are visiting Christchurch this has to be on ur to do list when u have kids. Keep at least 3-4 hours aside. The penguin feeding shows, the storm session and 4D movie all have timings so if u want to see all. Even I enjoyed the whole experience along with my daughter.
It was a great way to spend the day. Loved seeing the Huskys and watching the penguins have their feed. Next time I wouldn't visit during the school holidays as we were often pushed away from things before being able to finish reading as the kids wanted to use the items.
