The township of Clyde is about 5 minutes drive west of Alexandra, Central Otago. Best known as the start of the Otago Central Rail Trail, Clyde also hosts an excellent Wine and Food Festival at Easter.
"On the banks of the emerald-gree Clutha River, the little village of Clyde looks more like a cute 19th-century gold-rush film set than a real town. Clyde retains a friendly, small-town feel, and even when holidaymakers arrive in numbers over summer, it's a great place to chill out." - Lonely Planet 2012
Steeped in culture and history of early New Zealand, Clyde was born when thousands of miners rushed to the area after discovery of gold in 1862. It is now one of the most in-tact towns from the early NZ Otago Gold Rush of the 1860s. With its beautifully preserved historic buildings in the Historic Precinct, two museums, pretty gardens, café, restaurants an a myriad of outdoor activities, Clyde is a great place to base yourself for a few days and should not be missed.
