Story

More New Zealanders have learned to swim with Hilton Brown Swimming than any other swim school in the country. Since 1973, Hilton and his team have been dedicated to the essential task of helping people of all ages to become confident, competent swimmers who look great in the water.

Hilton represented New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games in Jamaica in 1966, where he enjoyed success in the 220 yd backstroke and earned a bronze medal in the medley relay. In 1973 he established his first learn-to-swim programme in Auckland.

Today Hilton Brown Swimming operates six swim schools throughout the North Island, and during our 40+ years of operation we estimate that we’ve taught more than two million lessons. Right now we’re teaching the children and grandchildren of the children we taught back in the 1970s. And in 20 years’ time, we’ll be teaching their children and grandchildren.

We’re excited to be working on plans for a purpose-built pool in Hobsonville and we opened in Palmerston North in January 2017. Every initiative is linked to consistently delivering our customer promise of a first-rate coaching experience. Teaching the complex skill of sliding through the water quickly and effortlessly will always be at the heart of our business.

Really enjoy the tadpole classes which we started when my daughter was 3 months old. Really good balance between teaching skills needed in the water finding the wall/mum or dad, and being comfortable with water submersion and keeping it fun with lots of songs and cheerful instructors. Highly recommend!

Avoid this place if you don’t want your privacy invaded by strangers taking photos/videos of you and your child in your togs. Although Hilton Brown have they have said they are not ok with people videoing others, they have done absolutely nothing to stop it happening and just turn a blind eye to it. Insane considering the cost of the “premium” service and the fact many other swim schools charging a similar amount do prohibit anyone taking photos/videos of lessons.
Our granddaughter goes here. The staff are caring informative and take away the scary part of being in water. Shallow enough to walk in but deep enough too. Staff are what makes it so good.
Nice modern facility. Clean and bright. Lovely teachers and nicely structured lessons that help students progress quickly. My son looks forward to his lessons each week.
My son isn't the most amazing listener or follower of instructions, but I can't speak highly enough of the teachers and their understanding of little ones and their patience. I am so proud of how far my son has come too, in a few short weeks. And it's such piece of mind knowing that he will be water savvy.
My kids love their swimming lessons. Teachers they have had are so friendly and great with kids. Fun and engaging lessons. Love when the kids move up a class and they get to ring the bell and get a cheer from everyone.
Hilton Brown Hobsonville have made huge steps to accommodate a bunch of requests to help my family get the most from their facilities. Helpful staff, skilled teachers.
My son started 3 months ago aged 4.5years. He was afraid to put his head in the water or even get his hair wet. Now he can hold his breath for 5 seconds and kick and paddle underwater. He loves swimming. The instructors are engaged and make lots of eye contact with the kids. Tip: book in the earlier time slots ie 9am as there are fewer kids. Better child to teach ratio. My son just improved exponentially after we changed to the earlier time slot. The pool is clean and warm. The changing room is clean also.
Highly recommend Hilton Brown Hobsonville. The results speak for themselves. Our 5 year old had been going to swim lessons elsewhere for months & months and was still too afraid to do anything much. Just over 1 month at Hilton Brown in Hobsonville in the School Age Beginner Class and she is not only swimming, but smiling throughout her lessons. The instructors and team, including reception, are so lovely and clearly good at what they do. Our daughters instructor Daniella makes the lessons so fun that the kids can't get stuck in their heads worrying, because they are too busy enjoying themselves and learning to swim all at the same time. Absolutely 5 star and can see why it's such a busy swim school.
