The Hihiaua Cultural Centre will be a vibrant centre of Māori and cross-cultural excellence, where the local community and visitors can be emerged in the living Māori culture of Te Tai Tokerau.
The proposal of The Hihiaua Cultural Centre is administered by The Hihiaua Cultural Centre Charitable Trust, established in 2008. The trust has planned for the renovation of the existing carving shed, located on Whangarei's popular Hatea Loop Walkway, and the development of a multi-use complex for performing arts, exhibitions, conferences and wananga, etc. This project fulfils aspirations of the past, to revive our Māori culture with integrity and authenticity by showcasing excellence in Māori arts, education and technology. The Hihiaua Cultural Centre is poised to become an iconic centre for cross-cultural awareness and understanding. Depending on available funding, Stage One of the project is proposed to be completed by Summer 2018.
