Wonderful, even in winter. Friendly and experienced staff. Calm and experienced horses. Stunning scenery and a diverse range of environments were covered in the 2 hour Rees River Trail ride. A fantastic way to experience this environment. The drive out there from Queenstown is also stunning.
Amazing scenery! Horses are very obedient so this is a great activity even if you have not ridden a horse ever. Instructors and guides are friendly and patient too. Go for the 2+ hour package and you won't regret it!
I actually don't know how to find the words. We me and a friend of mine did the 3-day Closed Borders ride, and I think these 3 days really were some of the best of my life. There are no words to describe, no amount of money that can give this experience. It was golden! First of al, the horse I got, Peso, she was most definitely one of the best horses I've ever ridden. She was so kind, honest, responsive and not scared to get wet or go for a swim. And she's a black beauty. Lets be honest I will never forget about her. I thought we would be with a big group. But the 3-dayride is normally with a max of 5 people. We were just with three people and 1 guide. That was actually really nice and personal! We were very lucky to have 2 very sunny days and only the last was a bit rainy. Around this time beginning of december the lupins are in bloom and as you see that gives some stunning sights as well! The roads we took were so rough, beautifull, challenging, sometimes we needed to push through the bushes a bit and the horses did that so well. Walking tracks that our covered with water. Through forest, through big fields. Some amazing canters over these days. I don't think I will ever find a ride with so much beautifull scenery. We stayed both nights at a hutt. They were so much better than expected and I really enjoyed the spare time I had there. Just sitting there in the sun with the horses in the grass, looking to the mountains and the horses. I did that for hours and I actually found so much peace inside of me that had been missing for quite a while. I really found myself in balance again and sheaded a tear. I was so insanely happy. I'm very gratefull for this moment and I am actually gonna get a tattoo based on this place and moment. Unforgettable. The second hutt was a little bit smaller but really cosy in that way. We could actually have a swim with the horses at the lake when we arrived there as well. The hutt was really close to the lake. Peso was really easygoing with swimming and we had so much fun. The sun was shining. It was one of the highlights of our trip! A shoutout to our guide Gaby as well who did everything to keep us comfortable, well-fed the food is amazing! 10/10! and informed us during our rides about the area, wildlife, the horses, some lord of the rings film spots and you could actually talk to her or ask about anything. I can go on and on about this trip and how lovely it was. Glenorchy and High Country Horses especially Peso have received a place in my heart. We are for 6 weeks in New Zealand, did this in the 5th week and till now there's nothing that made me feel so happy and mindblowing as this ride and scenery that comes with it. Take a look at the pictures, movies and decide for yourself. I have done many many horse trails but this is my number 1. I will think back about this ride a lot! If I ever come back to NZ I will definitely go back there again, maybe even for the 5 day ride!
I cannot recommend High Country Horses enough after an incredible and unforgettable ‘Around the Mountain’ 2-day/overnight trek. The initial booking process superb, Casey was so helpful and accommodating, getting me booked in and answering any questions I had very quickly. To ride amongst the beautiful back country was breathtaking. Day one actually ended up just being me and my amazing guide Anna. This one-on-one experience was not expected and only made my experience even more unforgettable. Anna was the perfect guide, she was quick to suss my riding ability, offered me so many opportunities to trot and canter along the Dart River and up and around Mount Alfred through to Paradise. Riding with Anna was a joy, she is an exceptional guide who I felt confident and safe with and the chats and fun facts that she provided along the way were brilliant. It was like riding out with a great friend. The overnight trip includes a stay in a humble little cabin located right beside Diamond Lake. The evening weather was perfect, where Anna and I were joined up with a 3-day trek group that was being led by the super lovely Max. We enjoyed some beautifully cooked food whilst overlooking the horses in the paddock. The weather was superb on day one, but Mother Nature really did turn things on for us on the second day! Most of us had awoke by 7.30am where Max and Anna were quick to get the kettle on and make a start on the delicious breakfast they cooked for us. Smokey bacon, eggs, pancakes, toast and jam, the perfect way to kick things off for day two. Once again the scenery and riding was absolutely phenomenal. Thankfully our group all had similar riding capabilities, so when safe to do so Max and Anna had all 6 of us cantering along the lake. I mustn’t forget to commend my trusty steed Gizzy who was an absolute trooper to carry me and look after me over the two days. He revived my love and passion for horses tenfold. Thank you to everyone at High Country Horses, you are all an incredible bunch, horses included, and I will be recommending you to anyone and everyone. Thank you for a truly memorable experience!
Great place to go horse riding! I have been to a few riding places and by far, it is the best. The horses are friendly and the coaches are kind and helpful. A very great experience, including some fabulous views of snow mountains, a remarkable sensation of crossing the Rees River and a mind blowing experience in letting the horse trot. I highly recommend this place to all wishing to try horse riding or are experienced riders.
We were lucky to book on this date! Such amazing weather Thanks to Amy Anna and Stella for all your hospitality. We loved it so much!! The 2.5hour ride was definitely the best for beginners
Best horse riding experience ever! Our guide was really kind and professional and made sure we felt comfortable the entire 2.5 trek. Views were amazing
Horses are well trained. And 1 hour ride was an enjoyable experience. They have a cute brown dog there ,he loves petting!
We did the rees river half day ride and It was the most magical experience ever to be horseriding in glenorchy, crossing multiple rivers, learning to do trots, through the wilderness with beautiful mountains, lupins and rivers for the whole 2.5 hours. It was a highlight of our trip in nz and we recommend for anyone who loves nature and horses to do it! My husband and I have never ridden a horse before except maybe to climb on its back to take pictures, yet we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly because the guide was so knowledgeable, patient, and taught us how we could steer the horses. We felt safe, yet with a whole lot of adrenaline. We hope to have an opportunity to learn more abt horseriding and come back one day to do the overnight horse riding.
Came here for a mummy daughter ride with my 6 year old. Had a wonderful ride, very relaxing and absolutely beautiful scenery to take in.
