I actually used Thrifty Car Retails which is a subsidiary of Hertz. The booking on line was straightforward, Car collection @ Napier was no problem & their pricing is very competitive worth checking out if you are travelling & need a nice current model car. A personal note. My only grouse with Car Rentals in general is their charge out is based on whole 24hr periods so If you cannot find flights to fit You end up paying for another 24hrs even if need another 4hrs or so. So be careful, I will still use Rentals but try to make my travel options fit.
I arrived at Napier airport at 8 PM, only to find that my travel agent had messed up my rental car booking and had selected Gisbourne Airport instead of Napier as the pickup point for my car. While I understand Hertz where technically within their right to take the money and tell me that it was not their problem - it certainly put me in an awkward position. It was 3 degrees outside, the airport closed 20 minutes after I arrived because it was the last flight and I was outside in the cold for several hours as I made phone calls and eventually had to spend $100 on a taxi. Clearly Hertz does not see themselves in the business of solving the problems of their customers, and that is why they were so quick to tell me that my problem was not their problem and made no attempt to help me out. The women behind the counter could not even give me a recommendation of how I could find my way to my hotel that evening - only telling me that I would not find a bus at this hour. The best she could do was tell me that I should try and find a plane that would take me to Gisbourne so that I could pick up the car there - ridiculous since the airport was closing.
We literally could not have asked any more of these guys - we booked the car absolute last minute and the car was ready to go first thing the next morning. We were greeted by the nicest staff when picking up the vehicle and then extended two days and arranged for a different drop off destination after a change of plans with ZERO issue at all. Could not recommend highly enough, made our trip so smooth and enjoyable. Thank you thank you thank you.
Ive always had good service from hertz. I don't know if it's because it's really hot or the staff are sick of complaints regarding signage but the woman behind the counter today was very defensive. I was told I had been at the airport for 10 minutes so I should go shift the car to a hertz spot, the signage was bad and I drove past the entrance to rentals 3 times! Then she said I would be charged, I sure hope not, without fear of missing a flight she had 10 minutes to get staff to move it. I even went to the trouble to go tell her where it was amd give her the parking chit.......
I hired a car from here through my insurer and it was fine.
Decent service, good cars and reasonable price.
Friendly efficient service....good face to face experiences with staff.
