I just needed a bed for the night,and this place was reasonably priced. There was a bit of a funky smell like moldy carpet,in the upstairs corridor,and the fridge in my room wasn't working. Although some might suggest the place looks haunted, I had no night visitors.Rooms: 3/5
Friendly staff, tidy room, reasonable price, good yarns from the regulars, cheap beer, free pool… what’s not to love? Oh and we won a few hundred bucks at the pokies too. All in all, the classic small kiwi town experience. We will be back!
I booked a room for 3 people, but few minutes later they call me saying it was overbooked. This happened 2 days ago. Still waiting for the refund. What a shame, this lack of organisation caused a headache in our trip through south island. You should better pay attention and be more careful with your guests.
Will not be staying there again. Pre-booked through expedia, but the online booking was completely ignored by the staff. Staff acted as if we never booked even after showing them email proof of the booking. This meant after we arrived within checkin hours staff had not check their online bookings for well over 24 hours or they would have seen the booking and prepared the booked room ..OR.. they were acting as if they hadn't seen the booking so they could up the price from $88 booked to $110 over the bar. "Bait and switch" and over a barrel with no where else to stay. Concerning questions for our expedia booking, would they take money from our bank too and who would be paying their fees? Did the staff cancel our booking through expedia and also keep the booking fee money? Or did expedia not do the booking? No reply from expedia at this stage. Staff missed out on meals and drinks profits because of the poor booking service and a $22 impromptu price increase. Food other people were eating looked reasonable. The room was not prepared - no soap, face cloths/flannels and items were still in the refrigerator from the last tenants items in the freezer that were melted in their packets. Remote had the batteries sellotaped in and the TV acted like it had "bad net" with glitchy freezes intermittently all evening. I had to deal to a full grown silverfish bug in the corner by the bed. It would be nice not to see assorted stains hopefully food on both sides of the bed cover. Shower was good. Bed was comfortable. Overall, the experience went from bad to worse from expedia to the pub as time went by, which is a shame as previously we have enjoyed many good stays here, but now there is different management. New Managers need to work on their customer service, room preparation, computer skills ? and consider bug spraying in the off season / close off sections.

Only used the restaurant section, so this review is based on that side of the experience. The restaurant was quiet, possibly because of both the current covid climate, and the time we were there which was around 5:30 Saturday. The menu while not listing posh sounding items was made up of good solid 'pub' food. I had the fish of the day, which was a large Hoki lightly battered fillet with fries.. it was very nicely done. My wife had a chicken schnitzel with mushroom sauce which was also a good sized portion. All the food tasted very freshly made. Will come again.

Great atmosphere, the patrons had no issue speaking with strangers. The manager was great to talk with while having a beer. At least 4 sets of darts for the board so you are bound to get your hands on a set you can enjoy using.
Classic ol Pub, like going back in time. Met a very knowledgeable ol local. The 1 beer we had was so nice & cold & gr8 service! Went to the sports bar side..not the public. Maybe check it out next time :
