Hastings Intermediate first opened its doors in 1954 with a roll of 666. It was the first intermediate school in Hastings. A population explosion saw the roll climb to 961 in 1959. Classes were held in every available space and a 7 day timetable was used to accommodate everyone. The opening of a second intermediate eased the pressure on Hastings Intermediate and its roll returned to a level that the school could cope with.
Two devastating fires have helped shape Hastings Intermediate into its present state. In 1984 a block of classrooms and a resource room were destroyed. The second fire in 2006 saw the school lose its hall. This was replaced by the new performing arts centre which was opened in 2008. The causes of both fires have never been determined.
