We stayed at this glorious campsite in Dec 2020. From the moment we arrived we were in paradise. We arrived in the morning after a long drive and were told we couldn't go in till 2pm, which was okay as we parked our van at the beach and had lunch and a walk. We have since found out from DOC that the 2pm arrival is actually standard DOC procedure - so no blame should be levelled at the managers for upholding the rules. We found Jo and Chris to be really helpful, and the beaches and walks amazing and plan to go back as soon as pos.
This campsite is in such a beautiful location and the camp managers Jo & Chris run it very well. We were made aware of the rules that DOC put in place and it was nice to see them walking around and interacting with the campers. Made us feel safer and knew we were being looked after. Facilities were very clean for what they are. I'd definitely go back and recommend this campground.
A lovely spacious campsite, we originally booked for one night but extended it to two as we loved it here so much! Beautiful beach perfect for snorkelling and relaxing, some very overly friendly ducks and clean toilets/shower facilities : the staff are also very nice and friendly, we were made to feel very welcome.
Amazing doc campsite right by the water! Would recommend getting a site with beachfront views. Perfect spot for camping in the summer there’s a walk ~5 min walk up the road that takes you to a path to the neighbouring bay which is also beautiful
Very well kept DOC camp. Credit to caretakers who keep the grounds tidy and mowed. Facilities were maintained each day we were there which was great to see as there was not a lot of people camping there. Sites are a bit wavy which makes it harder to get your caravan level but not a major problem
Such a good camp site! Classic simple DOC camp ground but a great beach. We've camped here a number of times with some other families and it's been good for all ages of our kids. Pretty family oriented the times we've been there.
The best and well maintained campsite I've been to so far. Generally you have to sacrifice either the view or the amenities but this is a perfect harmony between the two. Cars can be parked right beside the camp if required. Went to tent and the soil was just right without much resistance yet the required hardness. If you choose the sites near the beach line, the view next morning is amazing! There is also a beachside track which is easily done especially in those low tide moments. Though it says it's a bay, you don't have the odd scent and the waves generally come crashing about. The water was clear and the view amazing though I don't have many pictures but the ones along the track. At night fingers crossed for a clear sky you have a blissful moment with the milky way which can be seen from here with ease due to less surrounding lights.
Well kept campground situated just outside Whananaki. $15 per person per night. There is a nice little shelter to cook in, which was great because it was very windy when we stayed. The lady that runs the campground is very nice and can offer suggestions for things to do nearby. Beaches are beautiful. The mallards are super fun as well. Very friendly and will even hangout with you for a bit if you let them!
No hot water, no flush, no mobile coverage but a really good experience. Toilets are very clean, sites very large and flat. Away better than many private campsites that I have been to in New Zealand. Couldn’t recommend more.
One of the nicest Doc camping grounds we've been too. Tidy and clean facilities, awesome beaches and bays to explore and a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Will be back again soon.
