About

HangDog is an indoor rock climbing and bouldering gym for all ages and abilities. It's the ultimate team builder for school groups, families, and collegues

Story

How climbing works:
A climber is attached to a safety rope that goes up to the top of the wall and back down to the person holding the safety rope (belayer).

As the climber climbs up the belayer pulls the rope through a machine. If the climber lets go of the wall, the machine locks and the climber hangs safely on the rope.

The belayer can lower the climber on the rope from any height.

Belayers must be 13 or over. We recommend a ratio of between 2 and 3 children to each Belayer. So if you have 10 children coming, we'd recommend about 4-5 adults. More adults are unnecessary, and less adults means that the children won’t be able to climb as many times.

Experienced Belayer?
If you are an experienced belayer already then you'll just need to show your skills to the instructor (at an appropriate time) and they will give you a temporary belay license.

Bookings:
Bookings are essential. Make a booking now! We can teach you what you need to know quickly and then you'll be able to climb throughout the gym.

Timing of the Supervised Safety Briefing:
A briefing normally takes about 50mins. After that you can stay and climb giving a total of two hours in the gym.

Its good to arrive a few minutes early to get comfortable. You can watch and see how climbing works while you wait.

Once everyone's arrived, the instructor will give a belay briefing AKA how to hold the safety rope. Climbing will start pretty quickly.

After each person has had a go the group will have a tour of the gym to see what there is to do.

The instructor will continue watching the group belay until everyone has a "Temporary Belay License".

Once you've been given the Temporary Belay License you can climb where ever you like.

Full Belay License:
Once you have gained your full Top Rope Belay License you don't need to book a Safety Briefing each time you come in to climb.

Clothing:
People get hot while climbing so the climbers will need layers to strip off as they warm up. The gym is large and difficult to heat so belayers may wish to dress warmly.

Climbing shoes are recommended and can be hired for an extra $3.

We come in this place everytime our kids wants to have a climb and a good sweat. My kids are now 7 and 9 years old. It's great for building confidence and to know their limits. The staff are always friendly and helpful. I just hope there's more parking space.
Delightful place. Staff were absolutely lovely. Excellent gear quality and looked well maintained. The kids harnesses are notably way above the usual quality. Widely varied climbs, great bouldering areas, a fun rope ladder and more. Will definitely be back!
The staff here are super nice and passionate. They do a great job at training you to belay with very thorough walkthroughs. The walls at this place are great, and the amount of boulders to choose from sets this place apart from other climbing gyms. I also found it is less expensive than other gyms in Wellington, so if you can make the effort to go into the hut, its definitely worth it!
Great venue for beginners to advanced climbers. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Great fun for adults and children alike. Highly recommend
I can only speak to the bouldering section. Training area is above average but is only climbing training as far as I was shown. Overall the grading/difficulty seems quite strange compared to Christchurch, Auckland climbing gyms I have visited and the outdoors bouldering I have done. The jump from their blue tape 5th spot out of the 8 difficultys, was told this was v2 and feels correct to the next one up orange is very significant the next jump to the red makes them just as approachable depending on your style and strengths. There are 2 rooms one small and one larger. The smaller room is filled with slabs and verticals and is great for beginners and kids, then the larger great for everyone with some good overhangs as well. The routes themselves do have variety and if you're into powerful climbs, slow balancing climbs, etc there is an option even if you have an injury on a leg/arm/shoulder there is enough variety to work around it comfortably for a few sessions. The downside of this variety is climbs are very crowded and I found certain moves I wanted to do, blocked by other climbs big holds. Due to them being limited on space I understand them wanting to prioritize variety but it's still no ideal as it either limits options or increase injurie chance. As I was just passing through for a few sessions I am not sure how often they reset a wall but alot of the climbs best footholds have become polished and in some areas the wall has also become slippery and you can see this from photos others have posted and while this is on the easier climbs mostly and can be worked around for intermediate climbers, it will make a difference for beginners. Another thing I noted is the mats due to the outside material do pile chalk which end up on your shoes yet the mats can get bar floor sticky also depending on the area. Avoid peak times if possible as they can get crowded easily due to the size and available space for people to be. Seems okay as somewhere to go a few times but I would struggle to enjoy this as a regular.
Lots of fun bouldering routes and not too crowded. A nice range of grades from beginners to more experienced climbers too.
I’m a beginner / casual climber and have been to hangdog twice now. Today my partner and I were looked after by Frank who took us through the facilities and our belay training. They are amazing at their job! Very clear communicator, super warm and inviting personality. Give this person a raise! We will be back
Great place to go bouldering, they have a nice variety of walls 3 plate, 4 mild overhangs and 1 hard overgang.
Excellent experience as a group of complete beginners. The instructor filled us with confidence. A good time was had by all.
