Really sad to see this hostel go to waste. Obviously there are some issues with a lack of management and staff.nDuring our stay we noticed one of the boys continuously drinking on the job, kitchen was a mess and he did nothing, watched a plate break and didn't care.... Just on his phone and drinking all day.nThis was the dirtiest hostel I've ever stayed in. I don't think anyone cleans anything.nSheets didn't smell fresh, floors looked like they haven't been vacuumed in a year.nWe stayed for about a week and the garbages in the women's bathroom wasn't cleaned a single time.... And were overflowing. Dirt and dust around bunk beds as well as garbage left on beds.nYou could tell no one cleans out the fridges maybe ever.... Found things with month old dates on them, products well past their expiry in fridges.nThis hostel has so much potential and the bunk bed installations were so beautiful, with a nice big kitchen but unfortunately it's the lack of staff making this place what it is.
I don't believe this hostel deserves such a high rating. I booked through Booking.com and the photos were very deceiving.nnI had booked a private room with a private washroom. The walls to the rooms are so thin, I can hear the neighbours conversation clearly and worse, their sexy time.nnNor were the rooms properly cleaned! Upon my arrival I noticed the shower was dirty, there's mold buildup on the ceiling and corners of the shower floor and spider webs in the bathroom. The sink and the toilets do not look like they've been scrubbed cleaned in awhile.nnIf you're booking during the summer, take note there is no AC. You can open the windows but there is no mesh to stop bugs from coming into your room.nnThe rooms don't feel stable, you can feel the vibrations from people closing their car trunks outside, traffic, or when guest enter/leave their rooms. It's very sensitive.nnYes the price is very affordable, but if you're looking for more stability in a building, insulation for better privacy, and comfort without being disturbed by external factors, I believe spending a little extra on a different hostel or hotel would be a better choice.
The hostel's location is ideal, right next to a thermal park. However, the hostel itself leaves much to be desired: the kitchens, bathrooms, and common areas... The beds and rooms are adequate and pleasant if you want some privacy.nBad experience with travelers an entire family who made noise alcohol all night, with several children banging on the door at 6:00 a.m.
Prior to this one we stayed at Haka in Wellington and in Auckland CBD. We came with high hopes as our previous executive was very good. But this place has a loooot to improve.nnEn-suite had black mold all over the ceiling, plumbing was most probably in a bad shape cause after every shower the smell that came out was horrible. There was supposed to be a heater in the room but wasn’t, we had to ask for it for 2 days because they don’t have enough and need to cycle them between the rooms. We paid for parking and if for some reason your space is taken there is nowhere to park, you have to go to reception and tell them. This only works if it is not after hours…nnKitchen was the dirtiest place I have seen. All pans old and looked like health hazard with that chipping teflon. People had problem cleaning after themselves and the piles in the sink were giant every morning. Crumbs and dirt all over the kitchen counters and the same goes for all the kitchen sitting. I don’t this they have enough staff working there cause we seen one max two people trying to to clean the kitchen but it was very high level cleaning.nnSome people staying there look like full time residents from socially lower classes which we don’t mind if people are polite and clean of course but it’s totally different to the other Haka Houses.nnOverall if you stay in your room and don’t have the mold everywhere it could be OK otherwise I don’t recommend.
I have spent many nights over the years guiding groups at all the Haka house locations and they are generally good not has good as the pre-Covid YHAs they replaced. Rotorua though last night was a bad experience. First interaction was with a very rude and unfriendly reception. Then in general all our group’s rooms were not as clean as they should be with stained pillow cases, sordid shower curtains and toilets that needed a deep clean.nThe kitchen had grimy surfaces and microwaves and fridges that needed cleaning out.nAll in all a very disappointing experience and I sincerely hope they sort it out.
