Habitat for Humanity Auckland builds and repairs homes for families in housing need in the Auckland region. A hand up, not a hand out.
Habitat for Humanity Auckland works in partnership with people of goodwill and families in genuine housing and social need to eliminate poverty housing across Auckland. Working with a wide range of community groups, schools, individuals, and corporate organisations, Habitat Auckland builds and renovates homes for families who are living in substandard housing or through hardship are struggling to maintain their homes. Since our inception in 1994, we have committed to an ongoing home building programme, building on average 6 homes a year. We dedicated our 90th home on Sunday, 30 June.
Habitat is not a give-away programme. Families work in partnership with Habitat for Humanity by investing 500 hours of their own time to help build or renovate their own and other families’ homes. They are supported in each build by hundreds of volunteers from all over Auckland. Families then make regular payments to Habitat to pay for their home. These payments are reinvested back into the programme through a revolving “Fund for Humanity”, allowing Habitat to build more homes for families in need. Families are supported with financial advice and home management skills until the time they can refinance and purchase their home from Habitat.
Volunteer support is crucial to Habitat’s work and mission. We rely heavily on the goodwill of local people and organisations to volunteer their time or donate to our work. There are a number of ways volunteers can support Habitat, whether through volunteering on our build sites, at our ReStore, office, or for campaigns; donating goods or purchasing from our ReStores (secondhand goods stores); contributing financially to our work; volunteering abroad on our Global Village trips, and more. With Habitat, a financial gift will keep on giving. As partner families repay their loans, those funds are recycled to help house another family in need. We would love it if you would consider supporting Habitat for Humanity through payroll giving. Visit www.habitat.org.nz/ga to find out more about us.
