Absolutely horrendous! How do you injure your customers and then leave them to fend for themselves!! Day started out quite nice, easy ride out, lovely scenery, and a nice lunch. That all changed on the ride back to the wharf. The sea was quite rough on the way back in and Kurt, the skipper, took off at full speed without any warning. Not everyone was properly seated and 1 person was using the head. My partner was near the stairs to the tower standing as he hadn't gotten a chance to sit before Kurt took off full tilt and when we hit a particularly rough wave the entire boat went airborne. My partner hit the roof and then came back down landing on his feet and breaking his right heel. Kurt barely even slow down. I gave my partner my seat and sat on the floor as quickly as possible to avoid meeting the same fate. The skipper continued at this speed for the entire trip back, even with passengers vomiting and not having secure seating he has a license for 12 passengers according to his website and there were 13 plus himself on the boat that day. He never once slowed down to check on anyone's safety. Once back at the wharf on Sandspit he wouldn't help my partner off the boat, file an incident report or administer 1st aid. He told my partner it was just a mild sprain and to harden up. 3 months later his broken heel is still not fully healed and this sad excuse for an operator has never reached out and made sure he was okay or expressed remorse in any way. Don't go unless you're okay with potentially being injured for months!
My partner and I had a wonderful day out with Kurt at Little Barrier. We saw a pod of wild dolphins and were lucky enough to get in and swim around with them. Then we went to another bay where we kayaked and saw a baby hammerhead shark. Kurt was awesome and always made sure we were having fun while also letting us have our own space to experience this beautiful island. Also loved how environmentally friendly this tour was; encouraging no plastic, resuable waterbottles, and vegetarian lunches. Would definitely recommend!
Awesome daytrip to the islands! Kurt is a great guide, very knowledgeable, relaxed and friendly. Small group size, it feels more like a trip on a private boat rather than a big guided tour. We saw dolphins and snorkeling was amazing. Definitely recommend! One of our highlights on our trip to New Zealand.
Had an amazing day with Kurt and amazing food too. For lunch we've got a vegetarian wrap and for snacks we've got homemade cookies and muffins, absolutely delicious. The adventure took us to 3 beautiful snorkeling spots around the Mokohinau Islands and when you were tired of snorkeling you could just paddle around on a sup or kayak. During the trip he also took the time to see plenty of dolphins and almost a whale. The whale slipped away, but the thrill from searching for it was an adventure in itself. Absolutely perfect.
We had an amazing few days trip with Kurt the captain, owner and founder exploring, snorkeling, paddle boarding and kyacking! One of the many highlights was snorkelling with dolphins...twice! The islands are incredible, we covered little barrier, great barrier, mokohinau islands & fanal island. We went early november, so we often had all these incredible places to ourselves ! I would definitely recommend gulf eco adventures !
Had the most amazing day with Kurt on the Eco Warrior. Little Barrier was so beautiful, a day full of fun, swimming and sightseeing. Learnt about the eco systems and how we can protect the beautiful place. Highly suggest everyone comes along on a Eco Adventure!
I can recommend this trip as a superb truely NZ experience. Skimming along through the swells and waves, while relaxing in a bean bag tucked on the floor of the small but well equipped boat, watching the spray with droplets suspended in the air, was magical. Snorkelling in the provided wetsuit and gear was another highlight. To see a stingray, a school of piper, baby snapper, a myriad of other fish of different colours and shapes was an experience I shan't forget. Kurt is a quintessential NZ male. Friendly, laidback and very capable. A superb host. Thank you.
Absolutely fantastic Kurt was very knowledgeable and organised, with a friendly attitude. Boat was comfortable, tidy and looked in great condition. Locations were beautiful with adequate timing between them. Snacks were better than most cafes I've been to, absolutely delicious!
On our third day in New Zealand at the start of a four-week road trip, we booked a nine-hour adventure with Gulf Eco Adventures, a local business in Sandspit, up to Hen & Chicken Islands. What started off as an idyllic adventure turned into a terrifying experience which resulted in me suffering a fractured L1 vertebrae. Our trip began the morning of December 22nd, heading out from Sandspit Wharf. There were 11 of us on board plus the skipper, Kurt Salmond. When we arrived at the Hen and Chicken Islands location, our skipper Kurt found a picturesque and calm sheltered haven away from the waves for us to snorkel and kayak in New Zealand. It was on our return to Sandspit Wharf that disaster struck. Winds were high and the waters rough. When asked to slow down, Kurt replied that it wouldn’t make a difference and continued motoring at top speed. As we cut through the water, the bow of the boat repeatedly launched off the crest of each successive wave, crashing into the trough below. People were getting ill and not once through this entire ordeal did Kurt stop to check on his passengers’ safety. The physical damage I suffered was due to the boat launching off the crest of an extremely high wave, lifting me completely off the bench. I landed with such force on my tailbone you could hear the vertebrae fracturing. I was incapacitated immediately. We cruised into Marsden Point and I was transported to Whangarei Hospital by ambulance where I was diagnosed with a burst fracture of the L1 vertebrae. All remaining passengers made the decision not to re-board the Warrior and were left on their own to find a way back to Sandspit; a 1.5-hour journey by car. I ended up in the hospital for six days. I was fitted with an upper body brace. With limited mobility we were forced to cancel the remainder of our trip and instead stay in Whangarei for further medical observation until our departure home on January 14th. While in hospital, I corresponded with Kurt to update him on the injury. Thinking he would be filing an Incident Report with the Northland Police, I sent him a follow-up email asking for a copy of the report for my insurance company. His response to me was “Yoube [sic] got a real nerve Tim. Take some personal responsibility.” Needless to say, no report was provided. So I emailed Bookme requesting a refund to cover the $425 out of pocket expenses for a cab to get our vehicle in Sandspit plus overnight hotel for my travel companions in Whangarei. Kurt’s response to Bookme was “No refund”. #discovernewzealand #gulfecoadventures #sandspitwharf #henandchickenislands #bookme
A great day trip for my family. Services and activities were outstanding! Very impressed by how Kurt go out of his way to protect the environment too. Well done! Five stars from us all!
