Gannet Beach Adventures

About

Gannet Beach Adventures is located in sunny Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. Discover the magic of Cape Kidnappers, join our expert guides and visit the largest mainland gannet colony in the world.

Story

“Where else in the world can you jump in the back of a trailer and get towed along the beach by a 1949 Minneapolis-Moline tractor to a bird colony?”

Established in 1952, Gannet Beach Adventures has a long history of providing tours on a spectacular stretch of the Hawke’s Bay coastline, from Clifton to Cape Kidnappers. This unique and fun eco-experience involves travel with local experienced guides by vintage tractors and trailers on a comfortable four-hour adventure to the largest mainland gannet colony in the world.

Departing on the days’ low tide, visitors travel along the majestically rugged coastline, and stops are made throughout the journey giving visitors an insight into how nature’s forces have shaped this amazing area.

Travelling through the Black Reef colony visitors can almost touch the gannets in their natural environment, without even stepping off the trailer. Continuing onto the Cape itself, an approximate 90 minute break enables visitors’ ample time to picnic, swim, or enjoy a scenic walk to the Plateau colony.

Beautiful scenery, interesting geology, gannets galore, and knowledgeable guides. Great trip for people of all ages as long as you can manage the 30min uphill walk to the colony
Most unique experience in North island. You travel through the shores in a very old tractor to reach the place where Australian Gannets are colonized for reproduction
This is a trip worth while your $ and you get heaps of local and National and International history lesson included in the talks. Make sure to have right equipment and plenty of image processing power for breath taking images...and stay clear of the falling rocks!
Great service, we got contacted after running 5 minutes late. The tour guides were absolutely amazing. The walk to the Gannett nests had beautiful views and seeing the Gannetts was an absolute memorable affair. The geological sights along the beach is spectacular. Taking warm clothes and a snack is always a good idea.
Fantastic afternoon with the kids. Loads of scenery and the tour guide was knowledgeable and funny. Great walk up to the gannets and amazing views.
So cool!! Loved every single minute of it, our driver, guide and teacher was so nice and knowledge, we learned a lot the whole journey and had a great fun as well. What a unique way of riding on a tracker for beautiful view and good yarn! Thank you, it was definitely the highlight of our trip.
The guides are fun and knowledgable. The tractor ride is worth the experience alone, if you dont want to get wet, do not sit behind the big tractor wheel as water gets splashed up. If you sit on the left side of the trailer, you get the ocean side on the way there. My parents are in their mid 70s and my kids are 10 and 12 and everybody loved the experience. There are toilets at the end, up the hill with a picnic area. The walk to the gannet colony is 20 to 30 minutes and pretty much uphill most of the way. Beautiful 4 hours, highly recommend it.
Great service. Very humble people and they told us so many information. We went with young kids so this trip is very good for any age group kids. One of the lady on the trip was 97 year old. Trip guides made all of enjoy. Show the geological facts and even took the tracker in water several time. we will come again some time. thanks for great service and being so nice with everyone.
This was one of the first tour packages that we booked. There were good reviews about this and we arrived with great anticipation, looking forward to the black reef tour. After a short safety briefing and introduction, we got onto the tractor and set off towards Cape Kidnappers. Some sectors of the journey were bumpy and we would need to hold on to the hand rail. The bumpy ride was caused when the tractor rode over stones and rocks which include those which fell from the cliffs. The guide was cautious and would always advise us to grab hold of the railing whenever he anticipated bumpy road conditions. Thus, we were never caught unaware. There were also sections where we would go over water and some of us may experience splashes - thankfully, no one was drenched, just minor sprays. During the ride, the guide got off the tractor few times to share about the landscape, the history, the volcanic/teutonic activities which led to changes in the cliffs and towns like Napier. It was geography and history coming to life and it was definitely educational. We were asked to spot the different layers of soil/rock and to notice the lines/cracks caused by teutonic activities. The guide also took time to explain about the animals, the gannet, the issues with pests and the various campaigns to contain the pests. It was the collective efforts from the locals and government to protect their environment and such efforts were definitely praise worthy. We reached a stopover point and were given ample time to take photos of the gannet colony, the lovely cape and simply to take in the beauty before us. The kids were thrilled looking at dead jelly fish, spotting small crabs, fishes in entrapments of water. Being city dwellers, such connections with nature are so needful - something irreplaceable by social media. If you are a photographer, this is something that you must and I strongly encourage to take the last tour of the day so that you can capture some of the nicest sunsets Hawkes Bay has to offer. In all, an excellent field trip and one which we highly recommend.
Amazing trip to gannets. Local geological knowledge superb. Would recommend this trip wholeheartedly. Such value for money.
