Prices more expensive generally than fresh choice. There is a very rude woman there, oround 60 yrs old, blonde/grey short hair, sour looking, very hostile. She never greets customers when they come in, even if she has no customers, she treated me like I was trying to steal something when I went through the manual checkout, she stared hard at me with a filthy judgemental look when I was walking by outside. Wow. She does nothing for this companies business. Get rid of her! Other customers have complained. Why can't you see that? She either hates herself, her life or her job or all three & puts that misery onto other people! Get rid of her? She needs an attitude adjustment and fast! WOW.
While walking around to find dinner I made a small stopover to the grocery store when arriving at Te Anau. Got some necessary items for preparing breakfast as hotels in Te Anau do not come with breakfast and you have to dine out which is expensive and not budget friendly. Bread, fruit, yogurt, and organic milk are top essentials for a quick grab and go without the need to meal prep. Spent a little over NZ $15 for the items.
Unbelievably rude service. I’ve been to many Four Squares, but this is the only one where you get an eye-roll for a simple mistake at the self-checkout.nnTo the staff: Do your job instead of being judgmental. If your machines are inconsistent and confusing, that’s your problem to fix, not mine to suffer for. I came here to spend money, not to be treated with such a disgusting attitude. Truly disappointing for a local brand.
It's a town and traveler necessity, and that's what to expect overall. Not too far of a walk from the main campground when carrying a bag or two back and otherwise right in the town centre. I don't know if I can speak much to prices as every town has its own supply and demand challenges, but water and such seemed to be double. Aisles surprisingly well spaced, but with that small town feel to how it's stocked. Did feel put off by some of the staff as it just felt like a glaring contempt of us for some reason to where I wanted to try to lighten the mood just to break the invisible ice but felt it wouldn't be welcome. To end on a good note though, they did have this very tiny shopping trolleys for kids I suppose which was cute.
I had a pretty disappointing experience today. An older blonde staff member at self-checkout yelled at me very abruptly across the till and accused me of taking a bag without paying. I had originally been planning to use the reusable bag, but when I noticed the paper bags, I switched over. While doing so, she yelled across the area that I needed to pay for the bag. When I tried to explain, she insisted I wasn’t “allowed” to change my mind and seemed to expect me to pay for a bag I hadn’t actually used and hardly touched.nnI ultimately used the paper bag and scanned it, but she again implied I was trying to take the 35 cent paper bag without paying. It didn’t make sense - I’m clearly paying for my items, and the interaction felt unnecessarily hostile.nnIf the initial approach had been more polite, I would’ve assumed it was a simple misunderstanding. Instead, the tone and attitude made the experience feel targeted and uncomfortable. It also didn’t help that she made comments under her breath to another customer afterward.nnI hope staff can be reminded to approach customers respectfully rather than assuming bad intentions. It makes a big difference in how people feel while shopping.nnTo help identify the staff member:nShe was an older blonde woman working the till at the time of my visit 11/22 just before closing. I didn’t catch her name, but she had a distinctive appearance including noticeable gaps in her front teeth, which may help narrow down who was on shift to discuss her behavior.
