Forgiven is a historical novel, Forgiven touches on many subjects; it is a gripping tale, a beautiful love story and it creates tensions that hold the readers interest from beginning to end.
Many historical threads in this story are true - the original Whanganui Town Bridge could swing around to allow ships through. The Post Office clocktower, the steamboat Manuwai, the Tingy glass wagon, the all-night vigil on the stump, the story of the chase from Marist Brothers school and the cowpat attack were all real too.
The backdrops to the Anglo-Boer war are also relevant. Places such as Illwe, Jamestown, Burgersdorp were real, although my descriptions of them may not be entirely accurate. The British camp at Orange River Station, the Boer camp at Poplar Grove, the siege of Paardeberg Drift, and the fight with deWet in which the British lost nearly two hundred fully laden wagons are all historical fact as well.
