Story

Located in the heart of the infamous Hurstmere Road entertainment precinct, Florrie McGreal‘s Irish Pub is the best place in Takapuna to have a beer, meet some old friends or make some new ones. The atmosphere is informal and the music is a mix of Irish mingled with 70’s, 80’s and 90’s classics. The décor is typically Irish with a generous outside alcove area with its own fireplace and gas heaters for the cold winter nights.

Named after the owner’s grandmother, Florrie McGreal’s Irish Pub was first established in the Poenamo Hotel, Takapuna in 1993 but was disassembled in 1996 when Kevin Schwass moved his business to Hurstmere Road to open the iconic R’toto Pub & Café - now the site of the “Macs” Hurstmere Road Brew Bar - and the Rangitoto Brewing Co, now the site of the Blankenberge Belgian Beer Café. The “new” Florries was opened in its current location in August 2009.

Florence “Florrie” (nee Blakeney) was born in 1888, in Enniskillen, a small town in Northern Irelands Co Fermanagh, close to the border. Florrie married Simon Patrick McGreal, (whose parents came from Co Tipperary in Republic of Ireland), in Melbourne, Australia on Christmas Eve, 1909 and later emigrated to the Taranaki province of New Zealand.

Florrie from Northern Ireland was Protestant and a teetotaller, Simon from the south was a Catholic and enjoyed more than his share of the demon drink. To say they had an interesting marriage would be an understatement…

Florrie passed away in 1955 and Simon followed her in 1962.

The bar has eleven different beers on tap including Guinness, Murphy’s Stout and Murphy’s Red.

It has a 50” plasma screen and for the showing of sport and the Grain Room lounge featuring 18 gaming machines.

Florrie McGreal’s Irish Pub is managed by Colm McNeill-O’Keeffe, a Cork man.

So if it’s traditional Irish beer or some of New Zealand best beers and wine that you’re after, or maybe it’s to savour our typical Irish pub fare, or maybe just to enjoy some good music and craic, come and visit Florrie McGreal’s, our own “Pot of Gold” in Takapuna, the best little Irish pub this side of the rainbow.

"Locals and visitors alike treat Florries as a gathering point for everything Irish. It's an amazing neighbourhood bar featuring true Irish memorabilia and named after the Irish Grandmother of the owner. Guinness, Murphys, Kilkenny go hand in hand with Guinness pie, Jamesons etc. Totally worth a visit."

Guinness icecream is yum, pork rib has a large portion but if the bottom rack gets more sauce would be nice. Overall we enjoyed it.Food: 4/5
Kids meals were great value at $10 which included food, soft drink and ice cream. We also had bangers and mash, and chicken parmigiana, the latter of which was on special. Food was ok, nice enough for a hearty pub meal. Service was great.
We had so much fun great atmosphere great service food was amazing the staff for amazingFood: 5/5
Having arrived in Auckland very late in the evening Florrie McGreals was literally the only place open and we were starving. The only offering they had that late were toasted sandwiches. The bar tender happily obliged, making us two of them and I would have to say it's one of the best I've ever had. Mainly because he took the time to cook it really well hence it was delicious. Thank you it was really appreciated.
We had dinner here and chose off the Monday special menu. The beef and guiness pie topped with puff pastry was really tasty, served with peas and mash. Every month we have a ukulele evening from 7pm to 9pm so come along. It's really fun to sing along!Food: 4/5
We wanted to sit outside but there were so many flies. So we went inside which was fine. I had the fish and chips but the fish piece was small and overcooked. Good ambience inside although a bit quiet when we went there. Great barman, served us with a smile and a lovely accent if you want the real deal.Food: 2/5
This is my local and I love coming here. It's always a good time and good atmosphere! The bartenders are all amazing and so friendlyFood: 5/5
Nice and friendly. How ever food was the worst I have had at any eatery my steak I asked for medium rare was very well done and dry and tough. Not sure if that was because the guy taking the orders didn't write anything down or the chef doesn't know how to cook steak. Very underwhelming
Always sad to see your local go down the drain but thats the case here. They have all new staff, none of which were very friendly, the drinks have all gone up by $3-$4 over the last few months and the pool cues have all been broken for a while now. The pub it once was is a distant memory, disappointing.
Food good old honest pub food good service but they do need more staff. One guy on duty he did handle it well with a good smattering Irish sense of humourFood: 4/5
