Story

'Flaxmere' firstly to clarify the name.
A hybrid of 'Mamere' (being the name of the childrens beloved Grandmother!) and Flax, being the colours of the house when the flax is in bloom, it's deep purple black stems with orange red flowers echoed in the vibrant house colour.
Built in 1927, the Flaxmere Cottage was one of the early houses built in Karekare Valley. It has been in the Simpson Family since the late 1960's and has been a beloved childhood home and bach for us. Undergoing a major restoration in 2009, it has been lovingly renovated with neutral colours, a new kitchen and bathroom and the beautiful native floors have been given new life with sanding and varnishing. The house sleeps 6 but there is a small additional room that's great for kids.
Attractions locally are of course the glorious and awesome beach, many nature walks ranging from short ambles to the much bigger Hillary trail- Flaxmere is the ideal place to rest for a night after the first leg from Whatipu!
There are waterfalls, a huge swimming hole in the river at the beach and a few minutes over the hill at Piha, there is a variety of eating establishments, The
Piha RSA, the Bowling Club and the local cafe, There's also a dairy should you need more supplies.
In Summer the days seem endless, the valley sings with bird and cicada song, the Pohutukawa's bloom.
In Winter Karekare offers a completely different vibe, stormy nights, rain sodden walks on the beach, the roaring darkness and cold are rewarded with a crackling fire and a warming beverage upon your return.
Flaxmere is a truly wonderful place to getaway from it all, to unwind, to truly relax, finish (or start AND finish) that book you've got, play board games or sleep!

No internet or mobile phone coverage ensures time to yourself or your loved ones and friends.

Flaxmere is furnished with beautiful furniture gathered from a lifetime of collecting, and is a delightful place to stay.
