The 360 degree views from the top are spectacular. But the 15 minute-300 metre trek via the paved road, then up rammed earth steps and loose gravel inclines were a huff and a puff for the not very fit me. Worth it though. And walking back down was easier.
There are three tracks to reach the top. One is through the beach and then to the track. The average time is 30 minutes. The second track is to follow the road that goes to an end and then walk up the track. The time to reach the top is 29 minutes. The third is to take a vehicle which will take a minute or two. There is a car park where you can park your vehicle. The view is spectacular on a bright sunny day. The track is all up but possible. You do not have to pay to visit this historical hill. It is a great place to see the sunrise and sunset.
Terrific view from here, Russell, Pahia, Waitangi and beyond.nThenocean liner in was a bonus.
Great views over the bay. Access drive up, lots of parking or for the more active from Russell walk up Wellington St at end of boat ramp area. About half way on left access to bush track. Easy walk, approx 20 minutes. Exit onto road, follow about 200 metres and another track on right. Walk up stairs. Beautiful views. Exit via lower carpark into Wellington St.
A fabulous spot to walk to from Russell with great views across the Bay of Islands. It is a bit of hike but worth it for the views. Be aware that one of the trails is impassable at low tide.
