Federal Delicatessen

About

We love the simplicity and flavours of the traditional Jewish delis in New York and Montreal. Federal Delicatessen is Jewish comfort food, with a local spin. Think cured meats, lox, latkes, pickles & schmaltz - the best sandwiches in town!

Story

Delicatessen means 'delicacies' or 'fine foods' and we believe these come from the humblest of ingredients, many of them from the combination of salt, smoke, sweet and sour.

With a bit of luck you've heard of Depot, the fast-paced, award-winning eatery on Federal Street opened by Al Brown in 2011. Depot has been a huge success, thanks to a great team including Head Chef Kyle Street and Managers Joe Williams, Warren Ford and Dana Johanson, and we're out to replicate this magic with Federal Delicatessen

"Al Brown's approach to cooking is all about simplicity and generosity. His dishes deliver uncomplicated excellence and showcase the culinary landscape of New Zealand. People and place are key to his philosophy; wonderful friends and unique locations will always enhance an eating experience, and food is the vehicle for conversation, fun and memorable occasions."

Must be a really good place because we arrived about 15 minutes after they opened and already the restaurant was packed! Finally got sat 40 minutes later. The employees were very friendly and was able to make suggestions. The food was yummy as friends recommended the place. The only thing I wished for was a larger selection for kids.
Finished my yoga class on Saturday morning, quickly popped in here for a brunch, my first time visit although I’ve been eating to try long time ago. had toasted Reuben sandwich, waited for about almost half an hour, a quite a big one for me, the beef was a bit salty, still yummy. Would like to come back to try others if the food doesn’t take long to arrive.
Best chicken salad sandwich in Auckland. It's great either toasted or fresh, but preferred it toasted. They also have the creamiest cheesecake! This is where my husband ate the morning after our wedding, so it holds a special place in my heart. : service is top notch as well. We've been going almost every week.
Love The Fed! The first time I stopped in here was for a quick breakfast. I had their filter coffee excellent and their pastrami poutine so good!. Then the next time we came it was me and one of my kids, she is fussy. But there was a hot dog in the menu and she really enjoyed her meal. So that was a win! And last time was really recently for a family meal and to introduce our eldest to the magic of The Fed. It’s a bit of a road trip for us to get here but it’s one of my firm stops when we need to be in Auckland Central.
Felt like a real American diner, of only it opened late like too but that's a hard ask in AKL. Staff kept coming around to check on any additional orders and refill water. Food tasted great, portions to cost were fair. Good range of options of meals and desserts. Parking: It's in town so parking is obviously difficult but if Sky City parking is an option, then it's convenient.
I’m from New York, and The Federal claims to be an authentic New York-style Jewish delicatessen. So naturally, I had to try it out. Went here for breakfast, the griddle cakes and pastrami hash did not disappoint. Hash was tasty, but definitely not prepared in the traditional style that it would be in a Jewish deli back home. They also ran out of hot cocoa, which was a bit disappointing. Next time I go back I’ll have to try their matzoh ball soup — a staple of any worthwhile Jewish deli. Overall though, it was great, but not amazing. As someone who was born and raised around this food, I give it a solid 4/5.
What we ordered: - Grittlecakes $9 - Poutine $10.50 - Latkes w apple sauce $12 - Three way $21 - Bottomless filtered coffee $5 This was really good, which is evident through the rather large waiting list at all times I'd definitely recommend booking a table in advance. The latkes were my personal favourite. They were super crispy and were contrasted so well by the sweet apple sauce. The poutine was also great, I wasn't sure what to think about the texture of the cheese curds but the gravy was rich and the fries soaked up the flavour really well. The grittlecake was fluffy and so magical with a crunchy cinnamon-y strudel topping and blueberry jam. I also really enjoyed the three pies. The cheesecake was simple but really great. The strawberries and cream were a great accompaniment to highlight the taste of a plain but good cheesecake. The banoffee pie wasn't really my thing, I'm not a huge fan of bananas, but I still can't deny how nice it was with the crunchy popcorn topping. The pecan pie however was my personal favourite. It was not overly sweet but still had a caramel taste and the crunchy texture was such a nice contrast to the otherwise cakey crust. I'd definitely go again because I'm super interested in trying the toasted Reuben!
I had the small half Veal Schnitzel with sage and lemon, together a shaved fennel and apple salad. The Schnitzel was excellent, tender and tasty with a delicious crumbed crust, with sage leaves and lemon on the side. I will definitely come back just for the Schnitzel! The Fennel and apple salad was nice, but the dressing was a bit heavy handed and the sourness of the vinegar? took away from the taste of apple and fennel. It had the hallmarks of something potentially excellent but was not quite there in execution. I finished the meal off with a slice the New York Cheesecake. This was excellent. They can do smaller half slices if you fear that it might be too much after your dinner. Despite only giving this 4 stars for the salad, I will be back the next time I visit Auckland!
Came with a friend and my 11 yr old. Had the NY strip steak, poutine fries, toasted Reuben and the three way dessert cheesecake and pecan pie. The steak was great. Loved the poutine fries!
Best cheesecakes in town! We had the fries and 3 ways pies. Fries were just okay the sauce was too salty. The cheesecake, banana toffee and the pecan pie were legit so good!
