Probably the best official freedom camping location in Welly. Almost always full all the time in high season, best time to grab a spot is before noon after people wake up and leave. Possible to wait for a spot to empty as people leave for the ferry but you have to be on your toes as there sometimes are multiple vans waiting. Two flushing toilets open 24/7. Water fountain for drinking but none for filling up bottles. Might be tough if you’re sensitive to sound, campers come in to look for free spots throughout the evening into the night as the last ferries from Picton carries campers here until about midnight. No issue for me though ‍ if you can’t find a spot, I recommend reading through the freedom camping bylaw document on Wellington district councils website to look for prohibited or restricted areas so you won’t get fined. I don’t recommend taking gambles
Enjoyed stay, parking area has lots of space. Neat public toilet. Is next to busy intersection, so road noise. Close to bus routes, can take trips all around Wellington. Shops nearby to and restaurants with nearby dump station.
great place to to park up for a nite but you have to be there no later than about 4pm as its full. toilets avail always clean and tidy. some people are not certified and this causes problems for those who are, i know cause ive been there several times every year, they leave early so council who do the rounds wont catch them out. anyway check it out you wont be disappointed.
Our go to if we need to be early at the ferry terminal area in Wellington. Heaps of parking for big and small rigs, has an onsite flushing modern toilets and a dumping station. Easy walk to Kilbernie shops and township, excellent phone signal and the view from the bay and wellington sign and wind pin. Unfortunately, it does feel pretty cramped when the carpark is full and some low life vandalised one of the toilets with graffiti. It can also be noisy due to it being beside the main road into the airport and Miramar but it does the job of being within the city for the early ferry.
Nice free camp.nLots of space, but I will recommend coming before lunch time to get a spot.nOnly 2 toilets but they are clean.nn5 min walking you have free showers cold.nShopping supermarket 5min walk.nnFar from city centre about 1h walk. But you can take a bus.nnPerfect of you have to take the ferry.nnOf you are late and there is not spots street parking is allowed to camp from 8pm.
