About Personalised Wine Tours designed for discerning wine lovers by Don Bird. Story THE WINEMAKERS TOUR The Winemakers Tour is hosted by Don Bird a third generation New Zealand Winemaker. Don’s Grandfather established the acclaimed Esk Valley Estate Winery in the 1920’s. Don studied Oenology at Roseworthy College in South Australia and returned to New Zealand to head the winemaking team. Don’s wines have been awarded two trophy’s and many gold medals in New Zealand and International wine competitions. It’s Don’s deep passion for wine that encouraged him to share his knowledge of viticulture, winemaking and wine appreciation with other like minded people by visiting some of Hawkes Bay’s famous vineyards and wineries. Private Hawkes Bay Wine Tours - Maximum 4 people (Unless by special arrangement) For the more discerning wine lover, or people with a fascination in wine who prefer the flexibility of a private tour. Join Don on a wine discovery journey to some of New Zealand's most memorable vineyards, at your own pace. Don’s local knowledge and familiarity with the vineyards of Hawkes Bay is at your disposal for an intimate half or full day's vineyard and wine experience in a thriving wine region. Is wine quality determined in the vineyard or the winery? Over lunch discuss wine and food matching and the art/science of wine tasting using the three human sensors. Visit up to three wineries to taste the myriad of amazing wine varieties and styles that Hawkes Bay winemakers produce. Discover the influences of vintage year, grape composition at harvest, fermentation, yeast and oak maturation on wine style and quality. A walk through the winemaking cellar of one winery to discover the mystic of winemaking. Discussion on many of the processes from harvest to bottling. Is winemaking an art or science?
