Story
We welcome your interest in James Hargest College. We are very proud of our school and the high
standards achieved by our students and teachers.
We very much value our International Students. Our small numbers ensure they are all known
individually by staff and students. We aim to limit the number of International Students so they can
be assured of individual attention, and see their individual needs are met.
The employment of specialist, highly skilled and experienced ESOL (English for Speakers of Other
Languages) teachers, who work with small groups of students (generally less than 10), has ensured
high quality learning in a caring and supportive environment. Their results in national examinations
have been most pleasing.
James Hargest is a thriving school, which is reflected in the high demand for places from our local
community. We offer a programme that provides an extensive range of academic subjects and courses
with outstanding examination results. Our music and cultural programmes are second to none. All
sports teams and individuals do well locally. International Students are encouraged to participate
along with our “Kiwi” students and benefit from all the opportunities provided.
Our school offers full accommodation with homestay families. This helps involve them in the New
Zealand way of life. Invercargill is easily accessible by road, rail
and air; only one hour by air from Christchurch. No matter how
you travel to Invercargill, a Hargest staff member will be there
to meet you and help with your orientation to the city, school and
with your homestay family.
