An amputee on an account of a timber saw milling tragedy, he was the type who refused to let life’s mishaps put him on the back foot. Fashioning a footless harness for his horse he ran letters between Birkenhead and Dairyflat and not a single dog nipping at his ankle flustered him in all of 16 years.
