The Fire brigade was formed in 1874, and it soon collapsed for want of support. The year 1882 was significant as that was when a volunteer brigade was formed, a fire inspector appointed, the necessary engines and equipment purchased and a fire bell erected. From 1882 until 1909 the brigade was an on again off again affair. Tauranga has had a continuous Fire Brigade since 1909.
