It is one of New Zealand’s original “organic” export companies and is certified under the 2 main organic certification bodies, BioGro NZ Ltd and AsureQuality Ltd. Claridges Organic is based in Christchurch, the main centre of the Canterbury region in New Zealand’s South Island and sources product from the surrounding region and throughout New Zealand. Canterbury is New Zealand's largest region by area, with an area of 45,346 km² and the country’s largest area of flat land. Its rich alluvial plains are a productive and progressive agricultural and horticultural region. While traditionally a sheep farming and grain growing region dairy farm numbers are increasing. It is New Zealand's main producer of cereal crops - wheat, barley and oats. As of 2002, the region produced 60.7% of New Zealand’s supply of wheat, 51.1% of its barley stocks and 43.7% of its supply of oats.
