About Capital & Coast District Health Board receives funding to improve, promote and protect the health of around 300,000 people in Wellington, Porirua and Kapiti. We are also provide specialist services for the upper South and lower North islands. Story Capital & Coast District Health Board is one of 20 District Health Boards (DHBs) throughout New Zealand. We serve a population of about 300,600 residents and provide some specialist services for a regional population of about 900,000 people, stretching from the upper South Island to the centre of the North Island. CCDHB is a major employer in the Wellington region with roughly 4000 full-time staff. CCDHB has two distinct roles. The Service Integration & Development Unit (SIDU) is responsible for assessing the health needs of the people of the district, and contracting the most appropriate services to meet those needs. Hospital and Health Services (HHS) is responsible for providing secondary services via the hospital and community outreach programmes. Community, primary, secondary and tertiary health services are delivered from the Kapiti Health Centre, Kenepuru Hospital (Porirua), and Wellington Regional Hospital, which is one of New Zealand’s five major tertiary hospitals. Opened in 2009, it is the central region’s main emergency, and only trauma service, with rooftop helipad providing a link to surgical, intensive care, neonatal intensive care, and emergency services. Inpatient adult mental health services are provided at Te Whare O Matairangi on the Wellington campus. As a major teaching hospital, Wellington also provides an ideal educational environment for medical students at Otago University’s Wellington School of Medicine, and post-graduate training for clinical professionals. CCDHB also maintains close links with polytechnics and other tertiary institutions like Victoria and Massey universities for student training of nurses, midwives, post graduate mental health nurses, medical radiation technologists, dietitians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and pharmacists. Kenepuru Community Hospital provides secondary services catering to the communities north of Wellington, including Porirua and Kapiti. The hospital provides medical, surgical, maternity and child health services, plus services for the elderly, a specialist inpatient assessment, treatment and rehabilitation service, and outpatient clinics. Central region forensic mental health services, inpatient rehabilitation services, a variety of youth services, intellectual disability services and personality disorder services are also provided from the Ratonga-Rua-o-Porirua campus located on the grounds at Kenepuru. Community-based services include general and specialist district nursing, specialist multi-disciplinary rehabilitation services, occupational therapy, speech language therapy, physiotherapy, dietetics, social work and home support services. Mental health, alcohol and drug services are also provided in the community.
