About Science for Our Land and Our Future Ko te pūtaiao mō tō tātou whenua, mō āpōpō Story As the Crown Research Institute for the land, Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research's role is to ensure that all New Zealanders have the knowledge, understanding and tools to truly live in harmony with our land: enjoying its many gifts, preserving its unique diversity, and enriching it through our creativity, care, industry and culture. CRIs were formed in 1992 as independent companies that are owned by, and accountable to, the New Zealand Government. Our shareholders are the Minister of Finance and Minister of Science and Innovation. We have approximately 330 staff at nine locations across New Zealand, including a subsidiary, Enviro-Mark Solutions at Lincoln and Auckland.
