About The New Zealand Jiu Jitsu Academy is a progressive modern style of self defence focused on Community and street based self defence. Story Jiu Jitsu is known as the 'gentle art' or the 'flexible science'. Originating in Japan from ancient Asian styles of hand-to-hand combat used by Samurai on the battlefield when disarmed, it has developed into a modern system of self-defence. The principles of Jiu Jitsu enables anyone, regardless of physique or stature, to control and release energy to it's full potential. Jiu Jitsu does not rely on strength but upon efficient skill and technique. NZ Jiu Jitsu Academy is a progressive thinking Martial Art's organisation in this ever changing society. We have developed an evolved system of self-defence, while still recognising Jiu Jitsu's traditions and history. "Building character through Jiu Jitsu is the key to better understanding ourselves.
