About Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari - Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust Story Maungatautari volcano rises like a beacon above the Waikato just south of Lake Karapiro. The mountain has two access points which also lead to the two enclosures. The southern enclosure is off Tari Road (Pukeatua) and the northern enclosure is off Hicks Road (Cambridge). "Sanctuary Mountain is an ancient, vibrant forest protected by a 47km pest-proof fence, the longest of its kind in the world! At 3,400 hectares, it is New Zealand's largest mainland sanctuary and home to many of the country's endangered and at-risk species. Come and experience the New Zealand environment the way it used to be - lush and vibrant with native wildlife including many of New Zealand's rarest plants. Step through the pest-proof fence into another world, where ancient trees tower over well-maintained walking tracks and the air is filled with birdsong.
