About Opened in 1990, Aotea Centre was designed around specially commissioned works by some of New Zealand's most famous contemporary artists. Story Aotea Centre is a purpose-built performing arts centre, home to New Zealand’s largest tiered auditorium, a unique black box theatre, function rooms, and BOX Cafe and Bar. It hosts a wide variety of activities including key performances by New Zealand Opera and the Royal New Zealand Ballet, live music and is a perfect space for large conventions. Aotea Centre was specifically designed around a collection of beautiful New Zealand artworks by leading contemporary artists.
