About The historic Waikino Tavern, making history since 1897. Story Hidden deep in the magnificent Karangahake Gorge is a small, almost forgotten village called Waikino. Once the heart of Gold mining in the Waikato it is home to beautiful native bush and breathtaking scenery. At its centre is the Waikino Tavern. Located not even 2 minutes up the road from the main carpark Waikino Tavern is an ideal place to rest after a weary day of walking or cycling the pristine tracks through the gorge.
