About Locharburn Herefords was established in 1972 We Breed sound cattle with good bone and fleshing with a huge focus on feet and mobility. Mission Locharburn's 240 stud females are run on improved and native pastures where they are put under the same pressures as commercial cattle. From weaning (mid April) to calving they are run on very dark frozen blocks where a cow of poor structure or constitution does not survive. Any Cow failing to get back in calf is culled. Cows calve in paddocks behind a hot wire where calves are tagged, shedded off then quickly returned to improved hill blocks. Heifers are weaned onto improved tussock blocks and get no hay until calving. Bull calves stay in low blocks and paddocks where they are run behind a hot-wire and given some supplementary feed. This makes them very quiet and easy to handle. As rising two year olds, bulls get grass and some hay so they can shift to any new environment. Locharburn Bulls are noted for their shifting ability.
