About:
About A small, family-run vineyard at Awhitu in Auckland // try our lovely Bordeaux red or crisp, coral pink rosé! Story Cliff Edge Wines is a small vineyard located on a cliff top at the end of the Awhitu Peninsula with a panoramic, stunning view over the Manukau harbour. Here, the Seagar family grows Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes from mature vines planted in 1996. The unique mesoclimate and fine clay soil help to produce a zing, crisp, coral pink rosé, and a top-notch spicy Bordeaux-style red. Mission On their hunt for a city retreat, Vicki and Chris stumbled upon a one-hectare site situated overlooking the Manukau Harbour at the top of the Awhitu Peninsula. The land contained a little over an acre of Merlot and Cabernet Franc (70/30%) grape vines planted in 1996, plus a superb house site. They fell in love with the view of the harbour and always had a natural interest in land in wine, so why not become vineyard owners? The Seagars now have produced nine vintages of Bordeaux-style wine with the 2010 receiving 4 1⁄2 stars in Michael Cooper’s Wine Guide. Since 2011 they also make a crisp, dry, coral coloured rosé out of the same blend. The label is represented by Great Little Vineyards, and Cliff Edge wines are served in some of Auckland’s top restaurants like MASU, Odettes, Harbourside and Cazador. The next step is opening a cellar door so you can come to visit our vineyard and taste the wine as close to the source as possible. We are now in the planning stage and hope to have it up and running by the end of summer 2018. Products Cliff Edge Merlot Cabernet Franc- The Cliff Edge Merlot Cabernet Franc is a blend of 70% Merlot 30% Cabernet Franc. Grown from a single vineyard in Awhitu, it draws its roots from the French bordeax style wine. 6 to 8 barrels are produced yearly using traditional wine making techniques, matured for 12 monthis in a combination of French and American oak barrels. This wine can be enjoyed young with confidence or cellared to develop to its’ full potential. The 2010 vintage was awarded 4½ stars by well known wine reviewer Michael Cooper in his 2012 Buyer’s Guide to New Zealand Wines. 2008 and 2009 vintages are also available, the 2008 was particularly well recieved by both critics and friends. Cliff Edge Rose- The 2011 Cliff Edge Rosé is a simple yet elegant blend of both Merlot and Cabernet franc grapes grown from the same single vineyard. Gentle pressing and a cool fermentation have produced a lovely coral pink colour, with vibrant summer fruit flavours and smooth edges. Best enjoyed on a hot summers day. "This boutique vineyard in the Auckland region produces beautiful, bold and balanced Bordeaux-blends. Currently no cellar door; online orders only.“A very classy, powerful and fleshy wine, finely scented, mouthfilling and rich, with lovely colour, strong, ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, and silky tannins.”– Michael Cooper on the 2010 vintage, rated 5 starsCliff Edge is a family affair; the family's four boys all have a hand in assisting with the maintenance of the vineyard with their eldest son Ben becoming an emerging vintner."
