Story There are also two rivers with the same name in Waikato. One enters Kawhia Harbour, the other the Waikato River. The Awaroa River is a short river in the far north of New Zealand. It is 25km south of Kaitaia, and flows southwest for 12km, reaching the Tasman Sea to the north of the Hokianga Harbour.
