About Rowing New Zealand (RNZ) is the governing body of rowing in New Zealand both domestically and internationally. RNZ has been operating for 125 years. Story The New Zealand Rowing team is one of the most successful rowing squads in the world with multiple successes at Olympic, World Championship, Under-23 and Junior levels. New Zealand Olympic Rowing history that began in 1920 in Antwerp, Belgium with a bronze medal in the single sculls to Darcy Hatfield. New Zealand’s first Olympic rowing gold medal was won by the men’s four at Mexico in 1968 At Munich in 1972 our rowing eight won gold – and for the first time God Defend New Zealand was played as our national anthem. In 2012 Rowing New Zealand named its biggest ever Olympic rowing team – a team that included nine world championship gold medal winners in addition to multiple medal winners across elite U23 and junior world championships. Over 200 Olympic Rowers have represented New Zealand at Olympic Games and 21 Olympic Medals won by Rowers (9 gold, 2 silver, 10 bronze). Rowing is New Zealand’s equal most medalled sport – Athletics has also won twenty one medals.
