Durie Hill Elevator
"The Durie Hill Elevator is a public transport service that provides easy walking and cycling access between Whanganui city and Durie Hill. It was completed in 1919 and enabled the development of the Durie Hill Garden Suburb, first conceptualised by Christchurch architect, and garden suburb proponent, Samuel Hearst Seager. Still staffed by an operator and used for public transport, The Elevator is also a popular visitor and local attraction for it's history, technology and views - both from the top of the Elevator Tower, and from the adjacent Durie Hill War Memorial Tower. The Elevator is owned and maintained by Whanganui District Council, and operated by Whanganui Connection."

Loved this place! Only 2 such lights in the whole wide world. One in Portugal and another one is this one! Walk through the tunnel, it is painted white, well lit and best of all echoes loudly. Me and my child enjoyed making different sounds while walking through the tunnel. The lift is at the end of the tunnel. Ring the bell, a friendly lift man will bring the lift to bottom of the hill. During Jan 2023, they were running half price on the fares. It was just a dollar for an adult and 50c for kids. How amazing! I suppose many school kids still use this lift especially to carry their bicycles. Beautiful views at the top of the hill. Anzac tower which 300 m tall. We were almost 1000m above sea level at the top of the tower. Stunning views and beautiful experience! Kudos the team who are running this. This is a must visit!
What a wonderful piece of history and a great feat of engineering. Emma was the guide for the elevator and she was knowledgable and friendly. Great views from the top. If you have the energy to ascend 175 steep steps then you will get to the top of the tower and I imagine the views will be spectacular. They were pretty good from the smaller platform above the elevator. Durie Hill is a lovely suburb. Recommended

The views above the elevator are spectacular. If you're mobility impaired you can go down the driveway next to it, to get the great view pictured. The elevator is great and my kids love it! It's public transport, so half price. The tunnel at the bottom is very cool and loads of fun for noisy kids
An informative elevator operator gave us a ride up the tower. We then climbed the spiral staircase to be greeted with a great view over the city - although very windy.
A working piece of history run by volunteers. A vertical lift that takes you from river level up to one of the more desirable areas of Whanganoui for the sum of $2. There's an optional extra walk up the nearby tower to improve on the view over the local town and river.
Loved the experience. It lovely to think we still have history like this. What amazing engineering. Will definitely recommend to friends and family
Worth the visit and worth the consideration. Bit windy when I was here but it is an easy drive with some good sights to be seen overlooking the city. from me
The tunnel was really cool. There was a small cost of $1 per adult and $50c per child to go in the elevator each way. It was raining but the views from the top were still pretty cool
Interesting attraction. Long walk through a tunnel in the hilll to ride the old lift, which we were informed had an amazing history. The lady on lift was very nice and informative. Worth the visit.
