Zero stars. Wasn’t going to post this as I thought my fiancé had said enough, but seeing the poor response to her comment compels me. The owner here is extremely unreasonable, and I am putting my words kindly..nnStopped in while on holiday with my family - my first time showing my at that time soon to be fiancé New Zealand - to have a coffee, experience some of that famous kiwi hospitality, and for my partner to get some work donean unfortunate necessity as we’d been out of reception and my partner had a deadline.nnUnfortunately this was not to be the case.. We ended up ordered 4 coffees in total and stayed for a total of around 90 minutes, at which point the owner came over and kicked us out, exclaiming that we’d been there for 4 hours and apparently confusing us with someone who had been there the day before? Saying things like “you were here yesterday and I’m not going to put up with it again!” - this was surprising to me as it was my first and last time ever going to the place! His wife was a bit nicer and attempted to placate things, but to be completely honestly as a kiwi I’m embarrassed you guys. Like buddy, I get it, you’ve had a tough couple days, tourists can be annoying sometimes - but they also keep your doors open. Launching from 0-10 like that with no prior communication is wild…ly amateurnnAs someone with over a decade in hospitality experience I can say it was a very strange situation, At no point were we informed of a minimum spend or a stay limit - which would have been completely reasonable- we were happy to move tables when told there had a booking.. not a problem! But to then just come and kick us out with such hostility - when there are still l several free tables - with no explanation, except to insinuate that we were some other people is just baffling honestly…nnRest of the staff were all nice enough, but you’re in for a much better time across the road at Oliver’s, great service all round there. A much better representation of what New Zealand hospitality can look like.
Amazing heritage accommodation. Comfortable room, just a great place to stay. Breakfast at the in house cafe. Restaurants in easy walking distance. Great people great service
Excellent accommodation. We stayed here more than 10years ago when doing the Rail trail. Nice to come by car this time. Breakfast was great loved the stewed plums.
Dunstan Cafe for lunch was superb. The atmosphere was spot on, the staff friendly and efficient, and the food was excellent. We both had Salmon Stack, which apparently was a new item on the menu, well worth it. A great combination of smoked salmon, avocado, free range eggs with capers and rocket. Delicious! Highly recommend. Thank you everyone. Laurence and Carol.
Loved our stay here. Beautiful old building, fantastic hosts. We stayed in the Rustic room. Breakfast offering was excellent, the coffee on point! Thanks Ian and Meredith :
