Driving Creek Railway and Potteries

About

A one hour round trip on a narrow-gauge mountain railway - featuring superb views, magnificent engineering, unique art and replanted native forest.

Story

Barry Brickell (artist, engineer and conservationist) took 35 years to build this amazing switch-back railway. Railcars climb the mountain to the 'Eyeful Tower' with magnificent views over Coromandel town, the harbour and across to Auckland in the distance. The one hour return journey incorporates superb engineering and unique art features in a replanted forest setting.
Back at the station watch the dvd about Barry and the railway. Enjoy a walk in the sculpture garden followed by a bush walk in the NZ wildlife sanctuary.
Pottery, souvenirs, mini-bricks, the dvd and books are available in our craft shop.
Peruse the Art Gallery next door exhibiting pieces from Barry Brickell's personal art collection. (by donation)

This is a historic place definitely worth a visit, which carries a talented man's firm love for pottery.
A unique combination of an inspiring story, stunning views, and quirky creations - driving creek is a rare 'must do' for anyone from individuals to groups, and couples to families. Lots of photo opportunities, very friendly people and such a great back story. You won't regret a visit!
Wonderful experience with rich history. If have kids I will recommend u not to miss this gem of an experience.. nice views, joyful train ride with lots of tunnels and beautiful photos form the top of the mountain. Even their toilets have beautiful design worth looking at
3rd visit in as many years. We tell our friends & family about this place and end up coming with them. Raining this time, didn't get soaked and still enjoyed it. And still discovered something different not seen on previous visits.
I don’t know what we were expecting when we purchased tickets for this tour but it was much better than we expected. Loved the friendly staff, the story and the journey up to the Eye Full Tower. Highly recommend this experience to others!
Went with grandchildren 5 and 7 and they loved it. Arrived a bit early, but plenty there to keep them occupied ..walks, video, displays. Really family friendly. Great train trip with lots of points of interest. Well priced. A really fun adventure.
What a hidden gem! A really cool ride on a trail up into the bush with great views and a good narration on the history of the track and area. Before the train ride we had time to explore the walking tracks on the property and discover cave Wetas too!
Great family activity. The views were outstanding. The pottery, bridges and tunnels were awesome and my children loved the adventure. Highly recommended.
